The FilmWise Oscar Pool 2009

Woohoo, awards season is upon us. Nominations are still two weeks away, but I wanted to get the thread started so we can let people know this is coming and they won't miss it.

Nominations are announced on Thursday, January 22, and the ceremony is a full month later on Sunday, February 22.

We'll do it the same way we've done it previously. Read on so you know how to participate. Then sign up, so we know approximately how many people want to join (you may of course join without signing up, as long as it's before the deadline). If you fail to read the rules, don't come whining to me afterwards.

Rules
- The deadline for entries will be two weeks before the ceremony, on Sunday the 8th of February at 11pm GMT. The PM timestamp will decide if your entry is valid or not.
- All entries to be sent by PM to me. I will not open your PMs until I myself have settled on my picks and the deadline has passed.
- This is not who you think should win, but rather your predictions on who will win.

Scoring
- Scores will be weighed, according to Gren's excellent system: "3 points for the 'big 8', 1 point for the 'crappy ones', 2 points for the others". See below for more on this.
- The winner will be announced as soon as I wake up on the 23rd of February.
- The nominees, full scoring system, and format you should use is listed in the next post. Please read these carefully.

Prize
First prize is a DVD of your choice, as sponsored by yours truly.

Tiebreaker
Ties will be settled by who can predict best- and worst-dressed of the Best Actor nominees and Best Actress dittos. That category will be decided by Sugarpuss O'Shea and Mazer and can't be overruled.

Scoring system

Same system as last year. The "big eight" categories will be worth 3 points, the "small crappy ones" will be worth 1 point, and everything else will be worth 2 points. Hence, the maximum score is 48 points.

Below, you can see that we've given every award a number, and every nominee a letter*. Based on this numbering system you should submit all your entries to me in the following format:

1 A
2 B
3 C
4 D
5 E
6 A
etc.

If you do not enter in this format, your vote will be null and void.

Important! Please do not include any names or titles, however you should put line breaks between 8 & 9, and 16 & 17 to assist readability. It's your responsibility to check that the entry you submit actually corresponds to the selections you want. I don't want to hear any sob-stories about how you "meant to pick someone else, honestly". Also please put something like "Oscar pool entry" in the subject line, so I know not to open it.

Tiebreaker!

Do not forget to enter answers to the tiebreaker question - who will be the best and worst dressed of both the Best Actor nominees and the Best Actress nominees? Sugarpuss O'Shea and Mazer will pick the "correct" answers and in case of a tie, we will use this to settle on the winner.

These are the people you can choose from; remember you need one male and one female in each of the two categories, as specified below.
The guys: Richard Jenkins, Frank Langella, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Mickey Rourke
The gals: Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Melissa Leo, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet

So, you might choose to enter like this, for example:

Best - Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet
Worst - Mickey Rourke, Angelina Jolie

In. I predict that I've seen less than 20% of nominees. I also predict pain.

In. And I've probably seen even less of these than bratzks, so this should be an interesting experiment in trying to take the pulse of the Academy. Oh, and get to make fun of a lot of dresses.

I've no idea. I think it might just be a "feature" of the new forums. But for whatever it's worth, you have my word I won't look at any of them. Whatever PM your send last (as long as it's before the deadline) will count as your entry, should the edit function not work.

Woo-hoo, in. I'll take a look at some cheesy newstand mags in the next few week to get my judgey eyes ready (aw, who am I kidding? They're ready whenever there's someone in formal wear.)

Cold be interesting for me because I expect to have seen a higher proportion than usual of the nominees. But that might only work as a distraction, because I'll think more about what I think deserves it than what the actual buzz is.

I know, I can't wait for this! Maybe it's Project Runway withdrawal or something.

Count me in.

I won this last year (to my surprise!), and I am eternally grateful for first prize of a Take That DVD. You would not believe how many people have got a lot of joy out of that DVD!

Good luck!
