The Race for Gold 2010 - Awards on pgs 29 & 30

#1 Post by Sugarpuss O'Shea » 10 Jan 2010, 00:09

With A²'s blessing, I'm taking this over. I won't be much of a contender, but I can at least contribute my love of organizing data.

This is a race to see who can watch the most movies in the theater in 2010. But even if you're not in the running for that honor, there are other titles at stake. At this time, I'm not sure what "awards" will be given at the end of the year. I might just see what I can get out of the compiled data. I don't plan to record the money spent per movie, or money spent vs. cost of movies, but if you want to keep track of that for yourself, feel free.

Possible titles up for grabs:
Most films (not including repeat viewings)
Most films (including repeat viewings)
Most films that weren't seen by others in the race
Most films, by genre
Most foreign language films
Most 3D films
Most IMAX films
Most films in a month
Most minutes worth of film watched

Rules (subject to change):
1. Only feature-length films seen in a theater can be counted (exception: a screening of multiple short films, like when they release the Oscar-nominated shorts as a group, can be counted as one film)
2. Release year doesn't matter - old films, new films, they all count
3. Please post the movie title and the month you saw the movie (if different from the month of your post). When applicable, please specify if this was a repeat viewing (see #4 below), a sneak-in, and/or if you saw the 3D or IMAX version of the film. If you don't state otherwise, I'll assume it's not a repeat viewing or a sneak-in, and it was the regular, non-3D, non-IMAX version.
4. A viewing counts as a repeat for any movie that you have already seen in the theater. If you have previously seen the movie on DVD, VHS, and/or TV, but this is the first time you've seen it in a theater, that is not considered a repeat.

Anyone can enter, no purchase necessary. See last year's thread to get the gist.

You see, Hopsi, you don't know very much about girls. The best ones aren't as good as you probably think they are and the bad ones aren't as bad. Not nearly as bad.

Let me know if you have thoughts or suggestions about possible awards, or other statistics I could keep track of. If you have 2010 theater trips posted in the 2009 thread, please re-post them here. Thanks!

Another metric idea--most sneak ins? Can be a percentage of films seen rather than overall number. Someone who goes one day to see three films but only pays for the first would be an easy winner.

1/1 - Sherlock Holmes & $9.99

Running Totals
2 (0)
2 movies (1 sneak-in w/ 2 unique films)
206 minutes
$5 spent ($13.75 worth)

Am I missing anything else?

3 movies

1/2 Alvin & The Chipmunks 2
1/8 Youth in Revolt
1/8 The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus
all first viewings
The :) means it's all ok.

Sure, Agra, I can track sneak-ins.

To clarify my "rules":
  • I'll keep track of any data that is specific to the movie (run time, language, genre, etc.) in my spreadsheet.
  • I guess you don't have to post the exact date you saw the movie, I just need the month (since I was thinking of seeing who watches the most in a month, or the most each month). If you're posting an update with movies that were seen in a previous month, please let me know, otherwise I'll just assume it's the same month as your post.
  • My request for you to post a running total is mostly so that I can double check my number, but it's not necessarily a requirement.
  • If you don't post titles, I'll still keep track of the number of movies, but then you won't be eligible for the "special" awards for which I'd need movie titles to determine.
So, to sum up, you can format your posts any way you prefer, but I'd at least like the following info: movie title, month seen (if different from post month), and (when applicable) if it was a repeat viewing, sneak-in, 3D, and/or IMAX. Thanks!

Don't you still count the money that went to get you into the movies, even if someone else paid? For instance, if someone gives me a gift card, I still count the money that my ticket cost since they had to pay for the ticket. If I get a free ticket from frequently using my AMC card then I count that as $0 since no one paid for the ticket.

Do you count it double if you buy someone else's ticket that comes with you?

Yeah, this is why I don't want to keep track of the money stats. You guys can sort this out amongst yourselves.

I thought it was my out of pocket. I didn't pay for my ticket. This is why I didn't even try to keep track of that stat last year. I still have $115 dollars worth of gift cards left. WWKD? I have no problem with not even bothering with that stat.

Its not like any of the stats really matter. I was just noticing the difference. I don't think I had any gift passes last year so I never had the luxury of worrying about it.

I wish I had $115 worth of gift cards to the movies. Lucky you.

I count money out of my pocket. I have several movie passes my parents and friend gave me, and these all are $0. As are the Regal/AMC free passes I get every now and again.

However, if I pay for other people, I count both tickets (e.g. the Draven meet-up last year)

Deducting movie passes and other things that people paid for is stupid. You should deduct sneak-ins and other ways you get to see movies that nobody paid for. And counting tickets you paid for for other people is stupid, too. I'm not sure why you'd even print that, except to point out how cheap Draven is.
La la la la la.
