All movie talk goes in here, whether it's a raving review or a ranting tirade. Basically, anything about movies.

New Year's Movie Resolution (2011)

#1 Post by Agrajag » 21 Nov 2010, 13:20

[mostly stolen from Nunis]
New Year's Movie Resolution (2011)

If you're new and have no idea what this is, check out these previous threads:
Here are the "rules;" there are only four, yet some people seem to miss the 10-year-old or different color ones...

Rules
  • Everyone posts a list here of (at least) 7 movies that they have been meaning to see for a long time.
  • All movies must be at least 10 years old.
  • Then, as you watch them, quote your own post, cross them off your list and please highlight the new film(s) in some color so we can keep track and see everyone's progress.
  • Also feel free to link to a review you might have made in the The Last 3 Movies You've Watched thread, or just tell us the number of stars you gave it (see below).
Please do participate; it's been heaps of fun the past few years, and you'll get to see those movies you've missed for some reason.

You can start making your list now. 2010's thread will be closed out on New Year's Day. Don't forget to carry over any movies from this year's list you haven't gotten around to yet. If you're looking for inspiration, there are several lists on icheckmovies.com that work for me.

Any questions, post them here, or check the old threads.

Format your list something like this. In this example the first movie is one I have just seen, the second is one I saw a while ago, and the third is one I've yet to see.
  1. :check: Movie 1 :3.5stars:
  2. :check: Movie 2 :2stars:
  3. :empty: Movie 3
To get it to show up like that, use this code:

Code: Select all

[list=1]
[*] :check: [color=#008000]Movie 1[/color] :3.5stars:
[*] :check: [s]Movie 2[/s] :2stars:
[*] :empty: Movie 3
[/list]

My effort this year (1/24) was a massive failure and a huge overestimation of my own abilities. This year, therefore, I'm aiming small. Below is a list of the applicable movies from the IMDb Top 250 I've not yet seen. I will have a look at the list on January 1st and adjust accordingly. Let's see how badly I can perform this year...

0/10

In chronological order
  1. :empty: La passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928)
  2. :empty: Ikiru (1952)
  3. :empty: Les quatre cents coups (1959)
  4. :empty: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
  5. :empty: Barry Lyndon (1975)
  6. :empty: Fanny och Alexander (1982)
  7. :empty: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  8. :empty: Trois couleurs: Rouge (1994)
  9. :empty: Festen (1998)
  10. :empty: Fa yeung nin wa (aka In the Mood for Love) (2000)

I figure this year I won't doom myself to failure. I'm not choosing 18hr epics or stuff I think I "should" see. I'm limiting it to stuff I actually want to see. So far I've limited the list to the 40s and organized it by directors of other stuff I really liked. Does anybody have any suggestions for me to round out my list? I'd like to stick to the "theme" of 40s.

Preston Sturges
1. :empty: The Great McGinty (1940)
2. :empty: The Lady Eve (1941)
3. :empty: The Palm Beach Story (1942)
4. :empty: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944)
5. :empty: Hail the Conquering Hero (1944)
Howard Hawks
6. :empty: Sergeant York (1941)
7. :empty: Ball of Fire (1941)
8. :empty: I Was a Male War Bride (1949)
Billy Wilder
9. :empty: The Major and the Minor (1942)
10. :empty: A Foreign Affair (1948) **
Michael Powell / Emeric Pressburger
11. :empty: The Red Shoes (1948)
12. :empty: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
Orson Wells
13. :empty: The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) **
14. :empty: The Stranger (1946)
Michael Curtiz
15. :empty: The Sea Hawk (1940)
16. :empty: The Sea Wolf (1941) **
17. :empty: Life with Father (1947)
Misc.
18. :empty: Since You Went Away (1944)
19. :empty: The Human Comedy (1943) **
20. :empty: The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947)

** Not available from Netflix.

His Girl Friday (Hawks)
Rebecca (Hitchcock)
Rope (Hitchcock)
The Maltese Falcon (Huston)
Casablanca (Curtiz)
Kind Hearts and Coronets

I can think of at least one FilmWiser who might have some noir suggestions for you.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Thanks smithee. Seen everything on this list, but I've added some Curtiz flicks. The problem with Hitchcock is there isn't much of his stuff I haven't seen. That might be an idea for next year. Though Huston is awesome, he spent much of the 40s doing documentaries for the war effort.

I'll start with what I didn't finish this year, but it may change. I'd also like to keep myself to one other resolution - follow along with a Filmspotting marathon. I don't know if any of you listen to it, but it's by far my favorite podcast, and they always have really interesting marathons that I never follow.

FYI - you can use the "list" tags to avoid numbering things, and you're columns will line up nicer when you get to double digits..

Something like this:

Code: Select all

[list=1]
[*] :empty: Foolish Wives
[*] :empty: The Last Laugh
[/list]
Gives you this:
  1. :empty: Foolish Wives
  2. :empty: The Last Laugh

I looked this morning and found there were 19 films currently on the list I've not seen, 8 of which are too new to apply here (Toy Story 3; Black Swan; True Grit; The Secret in Their Eyes; Mary and Max; The Social Network; How to Train Your Dragon; Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring).

The remaining 11 are below and will form my list for this year. You'd think even I would be able to manage less than one a month. By the end of this year, I hope to have completed the IMDb Top 250 and will try my best to stay on top of any new old movies that might pop on. Final goal: to be at 250/250 by December 31st. Like always, I procrastinated with my resolution list and I had to watch 15 movies in the past two months to complete 2010. My 2011 list is probably overly-ambitious, but I've cut it down from nearly 50 films and I just don't know how to cut it down any further... Plus, I'm not going for the Gold in 2011, I'm cutting out some TV shows and hopefully I'll find the time to watch three a month

Going to carryover the unseen, and add for a total of 18. A slight reduction in number, but I feel like I should be able to handle 1.5 per month.

If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing

Working on a few AFI lists (100 years...100 Thrills, Cheers, Laughs)
  1. :empty: Marathon Man (1976)
  2. :empty: Wait Until Dark (1967)
  3. :empty: Gaslight (1944)
  4. :empty: The Picture Of Dorian Gray (1945)
  5. :empty: The Thing From Another World (1951)
  6. :empty: The Guns Of Navarone (1961)
  7. :empty: Blue Velvet (1986)
  8. :check: To Be Or Not To Be (1942) :3stars: As far as I can remember, this is the first movie I have ever seen with Jack Benny, and I'm not sure, but possibly Carol Lumbard too. A movie set in Warsaw about the Nazi occupation and the Polish underground and making jokes about concentration camps and it was made during the war? I wonder if it would have been any different if it had been after the war.
  9. :empty: Ninotchka (1939)
  10. :empty: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944)
  11. :empty: The Lady Eve (1941)
  12. :empty: It's a Gift (1934)
  13. :empty: Breaking Away (1979)
  14. :empty: Norma Rae (1979)
  15. :empty: The Diary of Anne Frank (1959)
  16. :empty: The Pride of the Yankees (1942)
  17. :empty: National Velvet (1944)
Headed for the grocery store, Wish me luck.

Late to the party, and determined not to phone it in for the fourth consecutive year

Exactly what I said last year, and look what happened - not a single damned movie ticked off. I swear my Sky+ box was conspiring against me. I recorded both Wall Street and The Wild Bunch three times and every time both movies were incomplete recordings or corrupted. Got them both saved again on the new HD box - fingers crossed!

:empty: 81/2
:empty: Aguirre, Wrath of God
:empty: La Dolce Vita
:empty: Double Indemnity
:empty: High Noon
:empty: Kind Hearts and Coronets
:empty: M
:empty: Rashômon
:empty: Rope
:empty: The Third Man
:empty: Wall Street
:empty: The Wild Bunch
Statler: Well, how do you like the film?
Waldorf: I've seen detergents leave a better film than this.

I really wanted to do a re-cast after I saw this. It's a great movie for one. I hope you do one, and I hope you give me a good part. :D
