New Year's Movie Resolutions (2014)

All movie talk goes in here, whether it's a raving review or a ranting tirade. Basically, anything about movies.

New Year's Movie Resolutions (2014)

New Year's Movie Resolution (2014)

Might as well be consistent and start a new Resolution thread. I found that having a thread like this actually provides me the impetus to go out and find the movies and then actually watch them, much more than I would if there wasn't a list for me to complete.

Hmm, I should probably make a similar list which includes me cleaning out the garage, painting the window frames, etc.

Previous year's Resolution threads:
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012
2013

Anwho, with props to McT for the original thread and Nunis and Agrajag for their follow-ons, here are the rules"; there are only four, yet some people seem to miss the 10-year-old or different color ones...

Rules
  • Everyone posts a list here of (at least) 7 movies that they have been meaning to see for a long time.
  • All movies must be at least 10 years old.
  • As you watch them, quote your own post, cross them off your list and please highlight the new film(s) in some color so we can keep track and see everyone's progress.
  • Also feel free to link to a review you might have made in the The Last 3 Movies You've Watched thread, or just tell us the number of stars you gave it (see below).
Please do participate; it's been heaps of fun the past few years, and you'll get to see those movies you've missed for some reason.

If you're looking for inspiration, there are several lists on icheckmovies.com that work for me.

Any questions, post them here, or check the old threads.

Format your list something like this. In this example the first movie is one I have just seen, the second is one I saw a while ago, and the third is one I've yet to see.
  1. :check: Movie 1 - :3.5stars:
  2. :check: Movie 2 - :2stars:
  3. :empty: Movie 3
To get it to show up like that, use this code:

Code: Select all

[list=1]
[*] :check: [b][color=#FF0000]Movie 1[/color][/b] :3.5stars:
[*] :check: [s]Movie 2[/s] :2stars:
[*] :empty: Movie 3
[/list]

I managed to complete 24 films last year, but that went right to the wire so I think I'll stick with the 2-per-month rate.

I've selected the last few Academy Award winners for Best Picture which I've not yet seen, some films off the current IMDb Top 250, a couple of Studio Ghibli features to keep things light and a sprinkling of other films that have always intrigued me yet which I've never seemed to find the time to view.

Okay, I'm going to jump back in. I haven't done this for a few years. I've been trying to watch all the Best Picture Oscar Nominees (Starting the year off at 322/505). But I thought I would add a few actors and actresses to the mix. I'm going to start off at 12 and may add some more later if I am going well.

0/12
  1. :empty: Days of Wine and Roses 1962 (a little Jack Lemmon)
  2. :empty: Gunga Din 1939 (a little Cary Grant)
  3. :empty: Funny Face 1957 (a little Audrey Hepburn)
  4. :empty: Stage Door 1937 (a little Katharine Hepburn and a nominated film)
  5. :empty: How the West Was Won 1962 (a little Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and a host of others and a nominated film)
  6. :empty: Elmer Gantry 1960 (a little Burt Lancaster and a nominated film)
  7. :empty: The Diary of Anne Frank 1959
  8. :empty: The Defiant Ones 1958 (a little Sidney Poitier and a nominated film)
  9. :empty: The King and I 1956
  10. :empty: Moulin Rouge 1952
  11. :empty: Father of the Bride 1950 (a little Spencer Tracy AND Elizabeth Taylor and also a nominated film)
  12. :empty: Spellbound 1945 (Lets end it with a blockbuster: Hitchcock, Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, and it's also a nominated film)
Hey cool, they're all at least 50 years old.
I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Started a little slow, but once they started driving I was hooked. My jaw actually dropped at one point (the end of the switchback scene). Had some nitpicks - how scared are they really of this stuff if the trucks themselves say not to smoke, but they just keep lighting up? Also, Linda's character. Or rather actress. I couldn't figure out if she was supposed to be a local or a foreigner, and if the latter, what her story was. Or how old she was supposed to be, her costuming, hair and the way she was treated all seemed at odds with her (admittedly gorgeous) face. Maybe the director shouldn't have cast his wife, I guess?
