Movies Spoiled by Trailers

#1 Post by » 19 Jun 2015, 17:13

One of the most frustrating things I experience on a regular basis are movies spoiled by the trailers. I understand that the studios need to market their movies to get the public to go out to see them. I don't understand why that marketing so often gives away so many key plot points in the process. I'm going to use this thread to document movies that I feel are guilty of this by putting my speculations into spoiler text. Once the movie is released we can go back and see what I missed. Anyone else is welcome to play along, too.
The :) means it's all ok.

The Walk
Spoiler
Joseph Gordon Levitt comes to America to walk a tight rope between the towers of the world trade center sometime in the 70s or early 80s. He encounters obstacles along the way such as getting access to the roof and stringing his wire across. A team helps him accomplish this. Some friends/family don't think he should do this. He steps on a nail and decides to walk anyway. No suspense about whether he successfully strings the cable or backs out because there he is, at least 20% across.
The :) means it's all ok.

Southpaw
Spoiler
Jake Gyllenhall is a good boxer. Then someone kills his wife, Rachel McAdams, and he becomes such a wreck that they take his kids away from him. Looks like some alcohol and/or drug problems. He bottoms out, goes back to his old gym to train, gets back on track and finishes the movie back in the ring.
The :) means it's all ok.

If you don't mind me hitting the historic, this one immediately leapt to mind:

Cast Away
Spoiler
We know he gets stranded and we know he gets rescued. WTF?! We even know that Helen Hunt's relationship has changed in the mean time.

For whatever reason, I've noticed that Robert Zemeckis movies are notoriously bad about this. I first noticed it the year Castaway and What Lies Beneath both came out.

Can you really say this about a movie based on true events though? Can it be spoiled by the trailer when most people should know the outcome based on history? Unrelated... the Titanic sinks BTW.

Spoiler
loving the trailer. Oooh look Clarke is John Connor. Nice. Oh. He's also the bad terminator. That seems somewhat like a spoiler that could change our entire view of the film? Cheers for that

I always thought I would hate My Best Friend's Wedding because the trailer basically showed the movie. Luckily there was enough not shown in the trailer even though I knew how it would end.
Robin: "Gosh, Batman, is there anything you don't know?"
Batman: "Oh yes, Robin. Several things, in fact."

With the trailer running in front of Jurassic World I'd guess that at least 10x more people saw it over people who saw Man on Wire or even knew the story.

I am not sure if spoiled is the right word, I always thought the trailer for Sleeping with the Enemy told the entire story an saved you actually having to see the movie.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2
Spoiler
Had the final scene of the movie in the trailer, and I called it the first time I saw it.
I have seen a few comedies do this recently.

In a slightly different vein, Ant-Man. One of the few times I thought partway through the movie "man, they really did just put all the best bits in the trailer and don't have much else". And therefore I saw all the funny moments coming. With one exception
Spoiler
Thomas getting enlarged.

The Perfect Guy
Spoiler
Girl gets a new man after her old boyfriend isn't ready to marry her and have babies. Passion ensues. He's perfect. Oh, except he's got a huge temper and is incredibly violent. He's not going to take it well when she tries to go back to her old fella. Bad guy spies on her and hacks her computer. Then he sends out an email of the two of them fucking to her coworkers or clients. The police are helpless! He's hiding under her bed! Eventually bad guy goes too far. In the end, the perfect guy is killed, probably by her.
