Minor modifications to Batman's post from a couple years ago:
Batman wrote:
New Year's Movie Resolution (2016)

Might as well be consistent and start a new Resolution thread. I found that having a thread like this actually provides me the impetus to go out and find the movies and then actually watch them, much more than I would if there wasn't a list for me to complete.

Hmm, I should probably make a similar list which includes me cleaning out the garage, painting the window frames, etc.

Previous year's Resolution threads:
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015

Anwho, with props to McT for the original thread and Nunis and Agrajag for their follow-ons, here are the rules"; there are only four, yet some people seem to miss the 10-year-old or different color ones...

Rules
  • Everyone posts a list here of (at least) 7 movies that they have been meaning to see for a long time.
  • All movies must be at least 10 years old.
  • As you watch them, quote your own post, cross them off your list and please highlight the new film(s) in some color so we can keep track and see everyone's progress.
  • Also feel free to link to a review you might have made in the The Last 3 Movies You've Watched thread, or just tell us the number of stars you gave it (see below).

Please do participate; it's been heaps of fun the past few years, and you'll get to see those movies you've missed for some reason.

If you're looking for inspiration, there are several lists on icheckmovies.com that work for me.

Any questions, post them here, or check the old threads.

Format your list something like this. In this example the first movie is one I have just seen, the second is one I saw a while ago, and the third is one I've yet to see.

  1. :check: Movie 1 - :3.5stars:
  2. :check: Movie 2 - :2stars:
  3. :empty: Movie 3

To get it to show up like that, use this code:

Code:
[list=1]
[*] :check: [b][color=#FF0000]Movie 1[/color][/b] :3.5stars:
[*] :check: [s]Movie 2[/s] :2stars:
[*] :empty: Movie 3
[/list]

Well, I did 25 last year and that almost didn't happen, but it did. I think I'll leave it at 25. It's a mixture of Academy Award Nominees, AFI Top 100s, some westerns and some anime. There's a smattering of foreign films mixed amongst those.

Last year I said this:
Batman wrote:
I'll try not to leave half until December.

Since I was sitting at only 14/25 on 1 December, I better make a bit more of an effort to space them out this year. so instead I'll say, "I'll try not to leave half until December. And this time, I mean it!"

  1. :check: Our Town (1940) - (1+30) - :1.5stars: This did not date well. Sentimental, nostalgic crap.
  2. :check: Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) - :3.5stars:. This film really stood up well considering it's 75 years old. I had previously seen both Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait and Chris Rock's Down to Earth and while I still think Heaven Can Wait is the best of the three, the original isn't far off in second.
  3. :check: Shane (1953) - :2.5stars:. I swear to God, if I had been Shane I might have had to shoot the most irritating kid in the west if he had said my name one more time.
  4. :empty: The King and I (1956) - (2+13)
  5. :empty: Throne of Blood (1957) - (1+50)
  6. :check: The Alamo (1960) - (2+47) - :1star: What a load of jingoistic, politically correct crap. I'm not sure exactly how the defenders of the Alamo felt, but I'm pretty sure this sanitized Hollywood version of war didn't even scratch the surface. And what was the deal with shoe-horning in Frankie Avalon? And for that matter, why try and throw in any humor? It's all wrong. Fuck it, I'm taking off another half-star.
  7. :empty: The Lion in Winter (1968) - (2+14)
  8. :empty: Five Easy Pieces (1970) - (1+38)
  9. :empty: Fiddler on the Roof (1971) - (3+01)
  10. :empty: The Last Picture Show (1971) - (1+58)
  11. :check: Cabaret (1972) - :4stars:. Liza definitely earned her Oscar here as did Joel Grey. It was a great way to tell a story.
  12. :empty: Solyaris (1972) - (2+47)
  13. :empty: The Towering Inferno (1974) - (2+45)
  14. :empty: Nashville (1975) - (2+39)
  15. :check: All That Jazz (1979) - :4.5stars:. The influence of Fellini's 8 1/2 seems obvious, but this is a wonderful film in its own right. Great dancing and a great vision realised by Fosse.
  16. :empty: Norma Rae (1979) - (1+54)
  17. :empty: On Golden Pond (1981) - (1+49)
  18. :empty: Reds (1981) - (3+15)
  19. :check: Only Yesterday (1991) - (1+58) - :4stars: I found this tremendously fascinating because I know so little about Japan. However, I could see how some might find it dull. I wouldn't recommend it for young boys as it's kind of "Are You There, God? It's Me, Taeko." Beautiful artwork and quite sweet.
  20. :empty: Il Postino (1994) - (1+48)
  21. :check: Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001) - (1+55) - :3stars: Decent story, though the final message seems a little trite for anime. Interesting artwork, good voice acting, for the most part, and a unique future vision.
  22. :empty: Wet Hot American Summer (2001) - (1+37)
  23. :check: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - (1+43) - :4stars: Downey, Kilmer and Monaghan are all great in this. Fast-paced with some great dialogue. It was a lot of fun to watch.
  24. :check: Tsotsi (2005) - (1+34) - :4.5stars: Beautiful tale with great acting in a nice, compact story. Wonderful film and deserving of the Best Foreign Film Oscar nod.
  25. :empty: The Queen (2006) - (1+43)

I wouldn't recommend it for young boys as it's kind of "Are You There, God? It's Me, Taeko." Beautiful artwork and quite sweet.
