The Movie Guess Game- come for the game, stay for the review

All movie talk goes in here, whether it's a raving review or a ranting tirade. Basically, anything about movies.

Bit of a delay getting this round up. I lost about a week of my life to the flu.

The Losers

This is a fun, surprisingly violent action romp, although I feel like its about 10% too silly. It has a crackerjack cast with several people coming into their primes. I think this is the best modern, non-Nolen, DC movie.

An American Crime

I asked my daughter if she was in the mood for funny or scary or f’ed up. She chose the latter and here we are. At least this version of the story of Sylvia Likens’ murder isn’t nearly as disturbing as Jack Ketcham’s version, The Girl Next Door. Its a dark, horrifying tale but at least a few of the most disturbing details are omitted. Its ok, its still very effective.

Navy Seals

I think this could have been a really great action movie. Sadly, Charlie Sheen’s character is such an insufferable shit that it turns the whole movie into a joke. I can’t claim to know what its really like for members of the seal team but I can’t believe they would allow someone that behaved like Sheen to remain on the team. He breaks the law and disobeys orders and gets people killed and somehow still gets to be the hero? He’s not even a good friend when he tries to steal his friend’s love interest. Fuck that. I’m team Biehn all the way.

Leaving Neverland

Man, forget about ghosts and slashers and zombies, this is the scary stuff. How does this stuff keep happening with celebrities? I am very thankful that we seem to be in the era of the rich shitbags finally being held accountable for their heinous acts. I’m a little scared to find out how deep and wide the pool of rich perpetrators goes but I hope every single one of them gets brought to light. This was very difficult to get through.

Sorry I left this hanging for so long. Between the flu, a busted phone and then a little vacation, its been a while. Over the last few weeks I realized I hit the wall and don't want to do this anymore, for the time being, anyway. I've got 4 already finished (plus 1 for the nsfw game) I'll go ahead and post but after that I'm stopping. More than anything I'm marveling at how long Frog has been able to keep his blog going, particularly with how much more comprehensive his writing is compared to what I was doing here.

Big thanks to everyone who played along.

The New Kids

This was an interesting little film. On its surface its just another 80s movie about the local bullies harassing the new kids at school. However, directed by Friday the 13th’s Sean Cunningham it has a lot of horror elements woven into the story. James Spader is really sadistic in this. He really established himself (along with Zabka) as the premier 80s bullies. Edited later- I hadn’t thought of Lori Loughlin in years and then in the same week I watched this she ended up all over the news.

Bad Times at the El Royale

This feels like it really wanted to be a Tarantino movie but since I tend to really like his movies that wasn’t a bad thing. It has a fun cast and plenty of surprises.

Hunter Killer

I had awfully low expectations going into a submarine movie but this wasn’t bad. There was plenty of non-sub action to keep me involved. The stakes were deliciously high.

The Matrix

I feel like this is aging fine but what’s being lost is how much of a monumental game changer this was for movies. The action remains great and the plot is still fantastic.

If I didn't have a job with a computer at my workstation I don't know how I'd find the time to do it either.

Thanks so much for all the work you put into this over the years, it really was lots of fun. If nothing else, I got to live vicariously through you and all the movies you were watching while my kid has me pretty much watching one movie, one repeat, for weeks (currently he is obsessed with Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, which is incredible, but not 20 times in a row incredible). Thanks again! And if you ever come back to it, I'll try and participate more!

A², I know you’re not posting here at the present time, but I thought this would still be an appropriate place to ask if you’ve seen Nick Cages’s Mandy. It seems like a film you’d watch. Anywho, I wondered if you thought it was as much of an unmitigated mess as I did.
