Accidental Love

I appreciate the unique story and the varied, talented supporting cast. I feel like the characters are too broad to be taken seriously but yet the movie is afraid to go full monty and commit to the zaniness.

Valerian and the City of 1000 Planets

Nevermind, this is pretty terrible under any conditions.

War for the Planet of the Apes

I was pretty conflicted during this movie. Clearly the apes are the good guys and Woody Harrelson was leading the bad guys. Still, despite how big of a dick the humans were, I feel like I have to root for the side that doesn’t result in the decimation/subjugation of my species.

The Double

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. A pretty good early twist sets up a fairly satisfying execution of a story that could have been really stale. I can’t say I’m a fan of either Richard Gere or Topher Grace but both do a suitable job here.

Fast and Furious 6

My son is really embracing the ridiculous action of this franchise. We even had to rewind the scene where Dom jumps across the freeway to save Lettie because once was not enough to fully enjoy how stupid that stunt is.

I'll stick with the classics I think...

(smithee was essentially the official go to for the DGA until 2000; several have been used since then (including Greene), but smithee is the G.O.A.T. (IMO).)

Mr Deeds

Like so many Sandler movies, this story is extremely basic. Even when they are remakes I feel like the majority of his movies were born from ideas scribbled on cocktail napkins at a bar but his somehow end up being money making movies. Its got a little charm and a few laughs, though. John Turturro particularly is very funny.

Furious 7

This is my 2nd favorite Furious movie. If we hadn’t lost Gal Gadot and Sung Kang in the last one, this would probably be #1 for me. Jason Statham is the best villain they have had, by far. The job they did to make it seem like Paul Walker was alive for the entirety of shooting is magic. Its only really noticeable a couple of times. There’s no telling how many times I couldn’t tell when they were tricking me. The ending to close the chapter on Walker’s run with these movies is well done and very moving.

Fate of the Furious

Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez are among my least favorite things about these movies and they are both really, really prominent in this one. I know Vin is prominent in all of them except 2 and 3 but before he was always balanced with equal doses of Paul Walker, plus all of the other characters I liked diluted his influence.

Spoiler
Spectacle-wise, I like that they turned Statham into one of the good guys. Plot-wise it infuriates me. This guy kills Han, blows up Dom’s house and time after time he tries to kill everyone and now he gets to come to the bbq at the end? No fucking way. Not to mention that Statham is Kurt Russell's #1 target for a decade and when he finally gets him locked up in jail he almost immediately frees him to recruit him. Its just dumb, dumb, dumb. That said, Statham’s fight in the airplane is probably my favorite fight from the entire franchise.

I wish they would spin off Diesel and Rodriguez into movies I could ignore and then take The Rock, Statham and Russell and make movies I would line up for. The latter could keep all of the rest of the crew with the exception of Scott Eastwood. Vin can keep him. They seem to be trying to groom Eastwood to be the new Paul Walker and I’m not having it.
