I neither want nor need him to win, but I'm really happy for Woody Harrelson. Whether we choose to acknowledge or not, he's had one of the great years in cinema history (Three Billboards, War for Planet of the Apes, Glass Castle, LBJ, Wilson) Billboards was the only one among them that stood an actual shot at a nomination.

And, get this, I'm still three Best Pictures short of the full complement. :P

Exactly how many films do you have to see in a year?

Apparently, at least three more.

I haven't seen Glass Castle or LBJ yet, but he was great in the rest.

Also: Dibs.

Which ones of these are considered sure things winners? I'm looking to get a few bets in. I've done well in years past with Oscar bets. They have odds on the big 6 categories.

McDormand and Oldman are probably the best two.

They are both big favorites.

The Academy Awards are tweaking things.
The Academy's message to members wrote:
Dear Member,

Last night, the Board of Governors met to elect new board officers, and discuss and approve significant changes to the Oscars telecast.

The Board of Governors, staff, Academy members, and various working groups spent the last several months discussing improvements to the show.

Tonight, the Board approved three key changes:

1. A three-hour Oscars telecast

We are committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours, delivering a more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide.

To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.

2. New award category

We will create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film. Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming.

3. Earlier airdate for 92nd Oscars

The date of the 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23. The date change will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process.

The 91st Oscars telecast remains as announced on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously.

We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you.

John Bailey and Dawn Hudson

The one I am intrigued about and also a little wary of is Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film. It's probably going to be nicknamed the Popcorn Oscar. It's all going to depend on what constitutes a "popular movie". One the one hand, at least some of these good movies that would never garner a nomination will now get one, on the other hand, if the movie is good enough to be nominated for Best Picture, it might be relegated to the lower award. And make no mistake, it will be a lower award, the Academy is basically throwing a bone to the general public.

What's next, the show will be aired on MTV? or will Oscar be wearing shades and holding a surf board? (oh wait! that's the Teen Choice Awards)

Here's hoping I can finish my Best Picture Nominees list before this all goes downhill :balrog:
