Hatchet 2

These Hatchet movies are really pretty wonderful. I feel like its the only post-millennial horror franchise that could hang with the classics of the 80s. Its clear that Adam Green grew up loving many of the same horror films that I did.

Species

I had this memory of this being a trashy film with no redeeming qualities beyond some T&A. That’s not quite true. The cast is really remarkable with Oscar winners Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker & Michelle Williams, plus Alfred Molina & Michael Madsen. Of course, none of them are doing anything close to award winning performances here. The only award Species should have been up for is Natasha Henstridge for most spectacular tits 1995.

The Snowman

This is an overly complicated murder mystery that can’t be saved by the greatness of Michael Fassbender. I think JK Simmons is terrific in almost everything he does but I hope I never hear him try to do an accent like this again.

The Patriot

No, not the Mel Gibson film, the one where Leslie Nielsen sends Gregg Henry and Michael J Pollard on a mission to recover a lost nuclear weapon.

Check out the wicked font in the opening credits

Death Row Game Show

This had the potential to be a scathing social satire of entertainment culture but it was far, far too dumb to be anything more than an eye rolling, groan inducing pile of shit. The jokes feel like they were written by a class of 13-year olds. The semi-frequent nudity is just about all it has going for it.

I have now reached the conclusion of a long journey. In May of 2016 I purchased a 100 movie set of “Awesomely Cheesy Movies.” The set contained 50 films from the 70s and 50 from the 80s. Death Row Game Show marks the final film of the entire set.

Vanessa

This 1977 German romance film is light on engaging plot and heavy on nudity. Every movie ought to at least have one or the other, right?

Victor Crowley

I think the Hatchet series is the best modern slasher franchise but this 4th film is a far cry from the quality established in the first 3. The characters aren’t as memorable or well written and the story is less interesting. The kills are, for the most part, on par with the first three films.

Justdrewit pulled off an interesting feat by guessing this film for one of the entries in the previous batch. He was just off by one round.

Requiem for a Dream

This has been on my amazon watchlist for ages, despite vowing a few years ago that I never needed to see this again. I guess its a lot like Long John Silvers. Every time I eat there it tastes good while I’m eating it, until I get about 3/4 of the way through it, at which point I start to feel sick and vow to never eat there again. Then, sure enough, 7 or 8 years later it starts sounding like a good idea again.

Dammit - I was so sure it was Michael Pena for so long I couldn't get past that.
