Downsizing

I had a decent time with this sci-fi story. Like with the Purge, this feels like an imaginative world in which more interesting premises could emerge than are found in the initial film.

Spoiler
Stupid Marketing ruins another good twist. I think I would have really enjoyed Wiig not downsizing with Damon if I hadn’t read about it in the description on the netflix envelope.

American Assassin

This really starts off with a bang. I hadn’t noticed Dylan O’Brien much before but he seemed to decently fill the role of action hero here. Michael Keaton doesn’t do anything special here but even mediocre Keeton is still pretty charming. I’m glad he’s still making movies.

Scary Movie

After showing my daughter Scream, the next obvious movie to watch was Scary Movie. Well, technically we should have watched Scream 2 (and probably 3 and 4) next and then fit I Know What You Did Last Summer in there prior to Scary Movie but what’s done is done. Anna Faris is terrific. The rest of the cast is a little underwhelming but the movie still brings an acceptable laugh to groan ratio.

The Room

Well, all the thousands of people who have said how bad this is are correct. The acting seems to be the most egregious offense but the writer, director, set designers and musicians are all complicit in the crime. That said, 3 or 4 nude scenes are enough to keep it from being the worst movie ever made. I’m not sure what it means, but I was able to finish this and not the movie I tried to watch before it. That ought to count for something when I found this more compelling than Phantom Thread.

The Disaster Artist

I enjoyed watching this. Part of me wishes I would have watched this before The Room but I really don’t know which way is better. I found the story so fascinating I went on and listened to the commentary track with both Franco brothers, the main two guys who made The Room and the author of the book about the making of the original film. What a trip.

I read your blog about Phantom Thread long before I finally tried to see it. I was so disappointed when I realized how right you were. I really wanted to like it.

The Wicker Man

I had forgotten about how heavily christian the detective is. It seemed strange to see how hard he was pushing the christian agenda as a representative of the government. I admit I’m pretty ignorant about modern UK religious history. Was there no freedom of religion in Scotland in the 1970s?

Perhaps I should have watched the Nic Cage version instead. Its definitely funnier and maybe a little better from a pure entertainment standpoint. I prefer the original, though. It is very creepy and unsettling. There aren’t a lot of movies that foster a growing feeling of uneasiness as well as Wickerman. Also, the Nic Cage version may have bees but it is sorely lacking in those prolonged shots of Britt Ekland’s 10/10 world class tits.

Trainwreck

As with almost every Apatow movie, this is very funny in places and pretty touching in others and also would benefit from being at least 10 minutes shorter. I really like Ezra Miller but his whole story could easily be cut for a smoother movie. Its not surprising when Shumer, Hader, Quinn, Attell, Bayer, etc are funny but Lebron and Cena were delightful revelations. They were both so amusing.

The Zookeepers Wife

The people that stood up to the Nazis and helped Jews showed such courage in the face of terror. I hope I can show the same courage in ten years when the trump regime rounds up all the Muslims, blacks and Mexicans here in the US.

I find it a little distracting in movies like this where the characters speak english but in a heavy regionally appropriate accent. I’m sure the Polish and German people in this film were not speaking accented English back in 1940s Warsaw. Best case would be actors speaking in the appropriate language with subtitles. However, if its not possible to get Jessica Chastain to speak Polish then just use a regular voice. That’s a stupid thing to be nitpicky about, i know.

Nymphomaniac: Extended Director’s Cut Volume 1

Its not appropriate to complain about a run-time when choosing an extended directors cut version of a movie. That said, at almost 3 hours, that is a lot of Lars Von Trier to handle. This isn’t nearly as disturbing as Antichrist or Dancer in the Dark but even the most approachable, Von Trier is still unsettling. The performances were strong and I’m looking forward to seeing part 2 to see how the story resolves.

Brawl in Cell Block 99

Whoa. Craig Zahler is really making a splash. His first movie (Bone Tomahawk) was brutal, gritty, unique and exciting and his follow up here is another step in the same direction. What a delight to discover this all by myself without anyone having to suggest it to me.

shit, that picture is so small and blurry I could have used this one in the regular thread. You can't even tell she's completely naked.
