I finally saw this last night, and I really enjoyed it. But at about 3:00 am this morning I woke up wondering...

...where did the 6 "X" marked bags and their contents come from? Did I miss something?

No, Knarf is right. There is a big flaw in the plot there (unless someone else can enlighten us both).

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

The question is, how did they get the bags full of flyers for hookers into the vault, in order that Benedict's security guards could then collect them and load them into the remote-controlled decoy van? The bags that are used to carry the money out are obviously brought in by Rusty's SWAT team... but the SWAT team doesn't show up until after the decoy has pulled away, so they couldn't have brought the flyers in that way. And it doesn't look like there was enough room in the cart for both Yen and all the flyers.

Also, while we're on the subject, can anyone explain the need for Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner)? His "purpose" was to get the briefcase containing the explosives into the vault... but why couldn't Yen have just brought them in with him?

I'll say it one more time: Watch the movie again and pay attention!

Well, I watched it again last night. And this time I did see Yen pull an empty bag from the container that he got into the vault in. I suppose the other empty bags could have been in there with him, but not all the hooker ads.

So unless they store hooker ads in the vault, I still think its a mistake.

BTW, Saul also provided the distraction when Linus went into the elevator.

******SPOILER********

Plus, I think Saul is actually Linus' dad (Matt Damon). I only saw the film once, but the underlying clues were there.

Good call on the distraction aspect, knarf. Well spotted.

*** SPOILERS (AGAIN) ***

I haven't rewatched it, but I've played the movie through in my head again a couple of times. I wonder if it was possible for the hooker ads to have been hidden in that room where Bruiser helps Danny get into the ventilation shaft? There were lots of carts in there, as I recall. From there, Danny could have taken them and placed them in the elevator, ready for when Rusty made his call to Benedict with the instructions.

No... they couldn't do that because there were motion detectors in the elevator shaft and they had only a few moments of no power to get themselves down... let alone the flyers...

I saw it twice in the theater and I own it as well... and you bums are gonna make me have to watch it again...

I am virtually certain the SWAT team brought them in... and then walked out with the cash in different bags. Hence the reason for the "X"'s... so they wouldn't mixup the cash with the flyers.

They had to have brought them... because everyone would notice them leaving with bags they didn't bring in... but not so many would notice if they came and went with bags... except they went in with bags with "X"'s on 'em.

Logic rules all get out... yo hommy... uh... word.

OK, you guys are gonna make me tell you huh?The robbery they watched on the monitor took place in the re-created vault the theives built. The chinese dude (sorry, I don't have the names memorized) went in and just waited for swat team to come in and stage the gun fight and explosion. The hooker fliers were in the van from the moment the left the hideout until the cops caught up to it.

Just skimmed through a few scenes again:

1) Sorry Anonymous, but the back of the van was empty when the casino guards loaded it with the bags. Its only the back that flames up, and its pretty clear that the burning flyers come from the burning bags.

Also, while Benedict and the casino guys were watching a tape (maybe not at the point after the SWAT team comes in, but definitely before then), I'm pretty sure that the gang in the hotel room were watching a live feed since they tried to warn Linus & Danny not to blow the door. The feed they're watching is the one with Yen and the empty x-marked bag.

2) Harry Lime, I don't think Linus is Saul's son, unless Saul changed his name and Danny & Reuben still refered to Linus's dad as Bobby Caldwell.

3) Odd Todd, the SWAT team didn't arrive until after the decoy left, as Buffoon1918 mentioned.

Well, I just had the brilliant idea to listen to the commentary track by Director Steven Soderbergh and Screenwriter Ted Griffin. They stated that it was a plot hole, that there was no logical way for the fliers to get into the vault, and they decided to blow it off. Kind of a disappointing way to resolve this. Too bad I didn't have enough time to listen to this track when I rented it back in May.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Thank goodness you guys worked that out! Now my question: Who the hell hired Julia Roberts to play the beautiful and glamorous ex-girlfriend?! I'm sorry but I just don't think she's cute. Even Matt Damon had trouble selling it when she came down the stairs and he said it was the best part of his day. His mouth reads the lines, but his eyes don't sell it. Anyone think I'm nuts?

Well, I'm pretty sure Soderbergh hired Julia, considering she did pretty well for him previously in "Erin Brockovich."

But I agree with you; I thought she didn't look good in this movie at all, and her part was lame.

**More spoiler **

And why the heck would she decide to go back to Danny at the end? Even if Andy Garcia turned out to be a jerk, Danny is still a thief and a liar too. The ending was lame, lame, lame. I guess the fact that Danny looks a lot like George Clooney helped with that decision!

She ends up with him at the end because like some women (not many, but a few) would rather be with a guy that loves her, than one that only loves money. Yeah, Danny is a theif and a liar, but they have a history that was probably very strong in the beginning. Besides, it isn't the first time a woman stayed with a man that had some serious character flaws. At least he dresses well.

To those who question whether Saul in Matt Damon's character's dad or not: HE IS......Mat Damon said it himself in the movie while Danny (Clooney) and he were talkin in the cafe at their first movie.

ANOTHER BIG HOLE: You remember when all chaos broke loose in the casinos because all electricity shut off from the pinch? Well note this: In the later casino scenes...everything was back to normal and calm as if nothing had happened. There's no way in hell that would be maintanable in a short period like that.

Say what?

I don't buy it. I'd believe Bucky Buchanan was Bobby Caldwell before Saul.

This entire thread has ruined the film for me............

Nah just kidding, I never really thought this film was all it was made out to be, nor have I seen any of the sequels.
