WellI think it's the same as films from any other country. If they're good, they're good. If they're not, they're not. Where they come from is of no importance. Saying that, City of Lost Children is one of my all time favourit films, and Jeunet et Caro and Luc Besson are two (well, 3 really) of my favourite directors.

how could anyone not love Amelie?
I would rather be having a burger and beers with my mates but I can't do that when I know I've got to dance!

A LOT of people actually.
Just for the record, I loved it.
There was a huge nonsensical (great word Gren) polemic (Am I inventing words?) about that particular movie.
Some journalists started to say that this kind of movies was politically
disturbing because it showed France as it was still in the fifties.
That everybody was white, and that the only "tanned" one was a simple
minded boy. (Jamel Debbouze is one of the greatest french stand up comedians).
In fact, what I think is that some people have a problem with success.
And as soon as a french guy is having some (Besson, Jeunet, Reno,
Cassel, Kassovitz...), some jealouses others are trying to make some
publicity (for us) out of their stupid criticisms.
And actually, I'm sure you do know some people that claims they're hating some movie everybody loves.
I have no problems with people not liking something, but what get on my
nerves, are the ones thinking they're smarter than you because they
don't like a successful movie.

yup. If i remember one of my very first posts here were about a guy I used to know who was a real film snob and thought it was only worth watching if it was a) foreign, b) pretentious (obviously these were often connected) c) you'd never heard of it. But, on the plus side, he did introduce me to David Mamet and Battle Royale.

To make a review for you would be the only reason I'd want to see that movie... :-?
I was not a huge fan of the first one, and since Cassel AND Kassovitz said no to that one...

I think its hard to give a diffinative answer. Its like saying do you like Hollywood cinema...well on a whole I guess yeah but they do make a ton of crap too.

In my film classes we watched some older french films which were good from a movie making stand point but I felt in most of them the plot and characters didn't really seem to have a point or go anywhere. (this is because Im used to Hollywood films where the story is pretty straight forward).

There are films like Amilee and City of lost Children (thats french right?) which I thought were surprisingly good (meaning I didn't expect to like em and really did). Then there are others like Brotherhood of the Wolf which was fun but also kind of absurd and rediculous.

Then you have the Hollywood films made by French directors like the Professional extremely good then the Messanger extremely bad.

So as an entirety I can not really say that I've liked more French films then I dis-liked or vice versa but they do make good films.

The only French movie that I've ever seen was "La Haine" (which means "Hate" in english). It was a brilliant movie with wonderful cinematography. It was very creative and the plot was interesting and made sense.
