All movie talk goes in here, whether it's a raving review or a ranting tirade. Basically, anything about movies.

"Book Into Film" Tourney-Winner: ...Cuckoo's Nest

#1 Post by Agrajag » 30 Dec 2005, 18:32

Did my best searching FW to see if this was ever done before.... Couldn't find anything so I thought I'd start my very first tournament.

Many live by the motto: "Never judge a book by its movie" (thx Gopan) but every now and again a novel/novella/short story does inspire a good, maybe even great film.

I'm bored, and I'm sure most everyone else will be too once the holidays are over, so, here's where I need your help. Start throwing out some good films that started in the library. We'll aim for 32, but most likely will stretch to 64 (maybe even 128! ) For now, I'm going to exclude plays -> movies to try to keep within the 64 bracket. If necessary we can add them in to even it out.

Just to be clear, it is not a prerequisite for the the movie to be better than the book (oftentimes this is impossible). Most of my nominations, I have never read the source material and some I know the novel was much better. When we get to voting (maybe not in the first round) we'll adhere to the rules that you must have seen both films in order to vote in that matchup. If we required reading & watching I'd think we'd have a lot of No Votes.

Also, feel free to double/triple/n-tuple nominate films. It will help me try to even out each of the brackets to avoid the main contenders going head-to-head Rd 1.

well, not to be a pain but what about something like Phantom of the Opera? A book with a play made (loosely) from it and a movie of the play?

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
Frankenstein (1931)
Dracula (1931)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Passion of the Christ
Silence of the Lambs
Jurassic Park
Minority Report
Blade Runner
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potters
Moby Dick
Sin City?

think of more later.

Not a pain at all... I say acceptable because there is a valid argument that there is a novel that exists on which the movie is based (with some other material in between the two). Now are you talking PotO (2004) or an earlier version?

Kind of sad I had to try to think what book that was based on  My parents would be so ashamed of me...

"guess"??? This isn't the N3TITO thread you know? ;-) I enjoyed it and think it's worth the nomination...

up to 50 nominations... I guess I might open this up to plays->films if we need to fill out the brackets but I'll wait a bit longer for more people to notice/nominate films

Good list.. we may need you to go on and on and on... I've only participated in these tourneys, never really looked at how they started... Should I call off nominations and pare down our list of 71 to 64? Or should we plow through and try for 128? We can open up this list to plays -> films for more to draw from... Plus there have only been 5 people nominating here (besides me) Is there interest in this??? I figured the holidays might have kept some from seeing this. Let me know if you want to do this and if the tourney puffed out to 128 if that would make you more or less inclined to participate.

The Great Gatsby
American Psycho
Fahrenheit 451

The World According to Garp
and a ton of john grisham books...i will choose...the firm

I see someone listed Adaptation, i dont think that it started life as a book although watching the film anything is possible

i picked adaptation because it was nominated for Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published, which I assumed meant susan orleans book "The Orchid Thief"

Thats my reasoning...

Though Adaptation. is certainly not a direct adaptation of The Orchid Thief, the former certainly inspired (as was the requirement of the first post) the latter. FWIW, The Orchid Thief is a real Susan Orlean book, though
Spoilotron2000 wrote:Laroche and Orlean don't find a ghost orchid in the book; the out-of-control ending doesn't occur (and not just because Charlie and Donald Kaufman don't appear in the book).

How about The Outsiders and Rumblefish. Both pretty good flicks. Perhaps not superb caliber, but very good films I say.

And how about Gone With the Wind?

I'm gonna have to say no... TV miniseries are on a different level than films. 300 minutes is a lot of movie! Maybe a Book into Miniseries tourney after this ;-)
Fat Head wrote:Lord of the Flies
I'm going to assume you're thinking of the B&W 1963 version cause I think that's more popular/revered than the Color remake
Humphrey wrote:Yojimbo (from Red Harvest)
imdb's Trivia page confirmed this although several other movies on this list has a (novel) (uncredited) listed in the Writing credits... don't know why this doesn't

I added Road to Perdition & Requiem for a Dream so we need 14 more movies and we're ready to start.... I want to shoot to start this next Saturday. If we don't have enough good nominations by Wednesday I guess we can fill it out with bad films from books.

Would The Nightmare Before Christmas count? Based on the poem "The Night Before Christmas"???

If you're struggling for other entries, why not the other Thomas Harris books (Red Dragon, Hannibal, Manhunter in particular deserves a shout).
Same for Chrichton, King etc.

Re: Nightmare Before Christmas... that's stretching it a bit, don't you think?

And how about When the Wind Blows?
