HOST GAME - ROUND 14 - snotball ** CLOSED **

#1 Post by snotball » 29 May 2003, 07:59

Here, in Israel, like probably in other countries, they tend to give movies some really stupid names, instead of simply translating the original titles.
On the left side there's a list of 40 movies as you might know them, while on the right side is a list of the names they received in Israel, translated back to English.

1. You get 0.5 a point for each correct match.
2. As usual, you can send as many guesses as you wish, but only the last one counts.
3. If you have any problem with any of the names on the right, be happy you only see them now. We have to live with them for the rest of our lives.

Code: Select all

How do you want us to submit the answers?

Do you want them # - # or title - title?
The :) means it's all ok.

Doesn't matter to me.

Oh, and in case it wasn't clear, you can check the ones you're not sure what they are on IMDB (that's for the names on left list of course :roll: ).

I wouldn't go so far as to say ruined, but you've certainly tarnished :lol:
Lionel Hutz, aka Miguel Sanchez, aka Dr. Nguyen van Thoc, was paid $8 for his 32 hours of babysitting.

He was glad to get it.

Got some more answers, so here is the updated score board:

alan smithee - 16
knarf = 15
Toto le Héros - 15
ironchefk = 14
MacManus - 10
gentle = 8.5
ze424 = 7.5

For the time being, it seems that alan is the one with the best chance of getting a part time job as a movie name translator.

I think I should have put the score board on the first post. Anyway, now it's too late.

alan smithee = 16
marla = 16
Antoine Doinel = 15.5
knarf = 15
Toto le Héros = 15

Patsy Klubb = 12.5
MacManus = 10
jeremiahs johnson = 9.5
gentle = 8.5
ze424 = 7.5
luke_os = 6

7 more hours or so till this game is closed. After that I'll even give some explanations to some of the names for those who missed the connection to the original title.

I still can't believe I forgot to enter Alien to the game. That one got the name The Eighth Passenger.

Patsy Klubb = 12.5
MacManus = 10
jeremiahs johnson = 9.5
gentle = 8.5
ze424 = 7.5
luke_os = 6

As promised, here are some explanations. As is evident, a lot of the names are plot driven, but there are some exceptions.

Two If By Sea got the name While You Were Stealing because of it's main actress, Sandra Bullock.
Avenging Force got the name American Ninja 2, because it was Michael Dudikoff's next movie after the first American Ninja. The distributers thought to pull more crowd in, so they named it American Ninja 2. When the actual American Ninja 2 came out, well you got it, it got the name American Ninja 3.
Independence Day got the name The Third Day because of the campaign they made for it. It went like "On the first day they made contact, on the second day they showed up but on the third day..."

Well you got the idea.

Well, I got lucky on a couple of those - too bad I didn't remember Sigourney Weaver's character's name was Eve in Tadpole :doh:
