I liked the format of Nicholasp's game, and thought we should try it again this year. But I haven't had a response from him, and he hasn't been here in awhile, so I thought I'd go ahead and start it.

Here's his post from last year, modified with this year's info.

This is a prediction and pick'em game with winner determined in early February, 2014 by the actual US Domestic Box Office Gross totals as determined by boxofficemojo.com

To play, simply pm knarf your entry by 1/24/13 11:59pm eastern time. Someone will then create a spreadsheet and we'll sweat the game in the thread during the year as movies come out.

Step 1 - Pick one 2013 movie from each of the 11 lines below:

Thor: The Dark World vs. The Wolverine
Anchorman: The Legend Continues vs. Hangover Part III
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire vs. Iron Man 3
Man of Steel vs. Star Trek: Into the Darkness
The World's End vs. Warm Bodies
Carrie vs. The Evil Dead
Monster University vs. Despicable Me 2
Oblivion vs. Elysium
After Earth vs. Ender's Game
World War Z vs. Pacific Rim
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone vs. Now You See Me

Step 2 - Pick 5 more 2013 releases (release date 1/25/13 to 12/31/13) that are NOT named in Steps 1 or 3

Step 3 - Tiebreaker: Domestic Box Office Gross of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Deadline: Jan 24th

We'll use boxofficemojo.com's Domestic Box Office Total for each movie at the end of January 2014, so we count the box office receipts in January 2014 until boxofficemojo.com puts up the receipts for the week that includes January 30th in it.

Winners:
Overall Winner - Person with highest total box office of their 16 movies - knarf
Pick'Em Champ - Person with most number of top choices for Step 1 - NoShoes
Scout - Person with highest total box office of their 5 Step 2 movies - Midrats
Marksman - Person whose Step 3 is closest to the actual gross - Sela

Ties in the first 3 categories will be broken by the tiebreaker (Step 3)

Remember, your Step 2 entries can't use any movie listed above. I'll post mine after the deadline, but before I open any PM's.

I changed the end date from January 31st, 2014 to Jan 30th (to end it on a Thursday). If you've already submitted and that somehow has an effect on your picks, please edit your PM.

Three popular films for step 2, then a good variety with only three picked by two folks and the rest unique.

The Lone Ranger - 6
A Good Day to Die hard - 6
Oz: The Great and Powerful - 4
Kick-Ass 2 - 2
Epic - 2
The Great Gatsby - 2
The Fast and the Furious 6 - 1
The Croods - 1
Oldboy - 1
This is the End - 1
47 Ronin - 1
I, Frankenstein - 1
Frozen - 1
Red 2 - 1
Jack Ryan - 1
The Host - 1
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 - 1
Gangster Squad - 1
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - 1

The Gangster Squad entry is technically invalid due to the release date, but I wanted to get the opinion of the other entrants. I'm inclined to keep it in but not count the box office before this weekend. It only made $8.64 M last week in it's second week. But if anyone else playing feels like it should be removed let me know.

And only three of the step 3 entries are even close to each other, with $26,000,000 separating Sela and F.N.G. with me be in between, and F.N.G. and I are only $709,710 apart.

And finally, every movie in Step 1 was picked by at least one person, and nobody made the exact same picks as anyone else.

Thor: The Dark World - 1 vs. The Wolverine - 6

Anchorman: The Legend Continues - 2 vs. Hangover Part III - 5

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 3 vs. Iron Man 3 - 4

Man of Steel - 2 vs. Star Trek: Into the Darkness - 5

The World's End - 5 vs. Warm Bodies - 2

Carrie - 3 vs. The Evil Dead - 4

Monster University - 5 vs. Despicable Me 2 - 2

Oblivion - 6 vs. Elysium - 1

After Earth - 5 vs. Ender's Game - 2

World War Z - 5 vs. Pacific Rim - 2

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone - 3 vs. Now You See Me - 4

(Too bad I didn't remember White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen for this section  )

:o So it's like a Sela-Knarf-F.N.G. sandwich?

Almost 3 hours - pretty slow FilmWise.

UPDATE:

Thor: The Dark World should easily be able to pass The Wolverine, and Ender's Game has a chance of catching up to After Earth.

Evil Dead should be able to hold off Carrie, The World's End has no chance of catching up to Warm Bodies, and Monsters University is almost $100M behind Despicable Me 2 and losing ground.

Man of Steel beat Star Trek: Into the Darkness by about $63M, World War Z almost doubled Pacific Rim, and Now you See Me made more than five times as much as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Elysium passed Oblivion just before it dropped out of wide release, and is still bringing in a little.

So, other than Ender's Game, the only real questions are if Anchorman: The Legend Continues can pass Hangover Part III at $112,200,072, and if The Hunger Games: Catching Fire can pass Iron Man 3 at $409,013,994.

I will, unless you want it back. I'll probably wait a few days after New Year's to post something.

UPDATE:

Thor: The Dark World passed The Wolverine awhile ago, and Ender's Game has passed After Earth by almost $1M.

Evil Dead held off Carrie, The World's End didn't get close to Warm Bodies, and Monsters University is done and still way behind Despicable Me 2.

Man of Steel beat Star Trek: Into the Darkness by about $63M, World War Z almost doubled Pacific Rim, and Now you See Me made more than five times as much as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Elysium beat Oblivion by about $3.8M.

Only two races remaining, and it looks like Anchorman: The Legend Continues will pass Hangover Part III, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will pass Iron Man 3.
