2015 Box Office Prediction Game - Deadline 1/22/15

#1 Post by knarf » 04 Jan 2015, 14:29

This is a prediction and pick'em game with winner determined in early February, 2016 by the actual US Domestic Box Office Gross totals as determined by boxofficemojo.com

To play, PM your entry to me by 1/22/15 11:59pm eastern time.

Step 1 - Pick one from each matchup in the 11 lines below (notice you could be picking two movies in the 11th matchup):

Star Wars: The Force Awakens vs. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Inside Out vs. The Good Dinosaur
The Fantastic Four vs. Ant-Man
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 vs. Jurassic World
Furious 7 vs. Spectre
Fifty Shades of Grey vs. Ted 2
Insurgent vs. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
Terminator: Genisys vs. Mad Max: Fury Road
Tomorrowland vs. Jupiter Ascending
Magic Mike XXL vs. Get Hard
Minions vs. the combined total of Cinderella and Hotel Transylvania 2

Step 2 - Pick 5 more 2015 releases (release date 1/23/15 to 12/25/15) that are NOT named in Steps 1 or 3

Step 3 - Tiebreaker: Domestic Box Office Gross of Mission: Impossible 5

Deadline: Jan 22nd

We'll use boxofficemojo.com's Domestic Box Office Total for each movie at the end of January 2016, so we count the box office receipts in January 2016 until boxofficemojo.com puts up the receipts for the week that includes January 28th in it.

Winners:
Overall Winner - Person with highest total box office of their 16 movies - Dawson
Pick'Em Champ - Person with most number of top choices for Step 1 - Dawson
Scout - Person with highest total box office of their 5 Step 2 movies - Dawson
Marksman - Person whose Step 3 is closest to the actual gross - Dawson

Ties in the first 3 categories will be broken by the tiebreaker (Step 3)

Remember, your Step 2 entries can't use any movie listed above. I'll post mine after the deadline, but before I open any PM's.

The Fantastic Four: 2 Ant-Man: 6
Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Pt.2: 3 Jurassic World: 5
Furious 7: 3 Spectre: 5
Fifty Shades of Grey: 8 Ted 2: 0
Insurgent: 8 Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials: 0
Terminator: Genisys: 4 Mad Max: Fury Road: 4
Tomorrowland: 3 Jupiter Ascending: 5
Magic Mike XXL: 5 Get Hard: 3
Minions: 6 Cinderella and Hotel Transylvania 2: 2
Step 2
Pitch Perfect 2: 6
Chappie: 3
Pan: 3
SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water: 3
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2: 2
San Andreas: 2
St. James Place: 2
The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: 2
The Peanuts Movie: 2
Black or White: 1
Entourage: 1
Goose Bumps: 1
Home: 1
Hot Tub Time Machine 2: 1
In the Heart of the Sea: 1
Kingsman: The Secret Service: 1
Last Witch Hunter: 1
Money Monster: 1
Resident Evil 6: 1
Seventh Son: 1
The Intern: 1
The Jungle Book: 1
The Walk: 1

Step 3
$290,000,000
$215,235,682
$210,000,000

$179,000,000
$150,000,000
$30,000,000

So Fifty Shades of Grey/Ted 2 and Insurgent/Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials don't matter for step 1.

The total number of theaters releasing MI:5 will make or break my guess. I did quite a bit of research on the prior Mission Impossible releases, as well as recent Tom Cruise film releases.
I love and hate this game. It's fun to guess, but such a long wait for the results.

While updating my spreadsheet for this year, I noticed that no two people have the same picks for Step 1, but there are a couple pairs that only have one difference.

Also, Midrats is the only one with 5 unique films for Step 2.

Man, I might have made my picks way too fast. I just re-read them on the spreadsheet, and had more than one "hunh, I picked that?!" moment. Next year there will be research!

Resident Evil 6 was the only one that really threw me.

Yeah, that's the most glaring. I can't account for it at all now. Unless I saw the 6 and though if the franchise has been going that long, there must be some money in it.

It's not a final yet, but I think I can safely predict our first result.

Tomorrowland is less than $2M behind Jupiter Ascending, which is already finished.

Me, redamin, and Dawson are (soon to be) in the lead for Step 1!

looking back at my "research," I must have been half asleep, or looking at opening weekend figures. It opened to well over 2,500 theaters. I hope I pull ahead elsewhere, cuz i'm out of the running on a tie-breaker.

Decided
Tomorrowland ($92M) vs. Jupiter Ascending ($47M, done) and Tomorrowland is still earning a little.

Ongoing
The Fantastic Four ($32M) vs. Ant-Man ($151M) - Looks like Ant-Man will win this one.
Terminator: Genisys ($88M) vs. Mad Max: Fury Road ($152M) - Looks like Mad Max will win this one.
Magic Mike XXL ($65M) vs. Get Hard ($90M, done) - Magic Mike has really slowed down, looks like this will go to Get Hard.
Minions ($306M) vs. the combined total ($201M) of Cinderella ($201M) and Hotel Transylvania 2 (not yet released)
- - - Could be close. Minions is still earning millions per week and Cinderella is almost done. The first Hotel Transylvania made $148M

Waiting for a release
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (not yet released) vs. Avengers: Age of Ultron ($457M)
Inside Out ($336M) vs. The Good Dinosaur (not yet released)
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (not yet released) vs. Jurassic World ($636M)
Furious 7 ($351M, done) vs. Spectre (not yet released)

Doesn't matter (we all picked 50 Shades and Insurgent)
Fifty Shades of Grey ($166M, done) vs. Ted 2 ($80M) - Looks like we chose wisely.
Insurgent ($130M, done) vs. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (not yet released)
