Mr X

#1 Post by Humphrey » 03 Sep 2004, 02:18

Introducing Mr X.

The rules are simple. Someone - for the sake of argument say me - thinks of someone involved in films, and announces the first letter of the surname. (ie. I think of Humphrey Bogart, and announce: I am Mr B.)

Then, those wishing to participate in the fun have to ask questions, beginning with: Are you... and then give a cryptic description of someone, whose surname begins with the letter given (ie. Are you a secretive man, who is very particular about his cocktails?). If I know who you thought of (Bond, James Bond) and can name him properly, we proceed to the next Are you type question.

If I cannot guess who you thought of, you get to ask me a "yes or no" question about the person I thought of. (ie. Are you real or fictional?) The more questions I fail to answer, the more information you have on the person I thought of. Eventually you will have enough information to guess who I thought of, at which point you take over and think of someone and announce the first letter of the surname.

The information you have acquired along the way, however, does not limit your choices for the Are you type questions. (ie You may know that I thought of a short, balding, smoking, American tough-guy actor, and still ask me if I was the queen of Max Reinhardt's theatre in 30's Germany, and I would tell you no, I'm not Sarah Bernhard.)

With every answer I give, or fail to give, I include the list of information you have so far learned. This will make it easier to make sure that the same "yes or no" question is not asked twice, and that the available information is at your fingertips to test your guess.

The thing is, you have to try an catch me out, so that I cannot guess who you are thinking of, otherwise you will never get a clue as to who I am.[/i]

At the same time you need to give me a fair chance. Not too much information, not too little, but barely enough.

If you are asking a "yes or no" question, I cannot answer you, unless you tell me that I got an "Are you" question wrong. If you are asking me an "Are you" question, you are not really giving me enough information.

Let us suppose I am Mr T.
The way I would phrase an "Are you" question is this: Are you, by any chance, an independent director with a penchant for plagiarism?

And I would answer: No, I am not Tarantino.

Now that's the kind of "Are you" question I'm after. :D
I haven't the foggiest. You've got your first "yes or no" question.

Unless you are not thinking of a Mr S, but of a Mr C. In which case you are thinking of a Mr Coen, but you cannot have a question, because you need to think of someone with the same first letter in the surname as the person I thought of. In this case, Mr S.
