The Big Game III - And the winners are...

#1 Post by Nunis » 29 Mar 2006, 04:07

The Big Game III

Introduction

It's been over a year since the last game wrapped, and I figured it was time for another one. It's been too long since I created any quizzes, and I'm starting to feel the itch. Hey, maybe I should make this an annual event.

For the benefit of newbies, back in 2003, I ran a quiz called The Big Game which ran for ten weeks. People teamed up in twos to answer a wide variety of questions. Luke_os and Gentle won. Then last year (well, it started in the autumn of 2004), I ran another one, The Big Game II. Bing and Ulkesh came out victorious, and it seemed popular enough that I thought "hey, I can do this again, that was fun".

So, here we are. The itch needs some scratching. Please read these rules carefully. They're more or less the same as in the other big games, but read them through anyway. Also, suggestions are welcome.

I'm gonna have a good think about this to try to come up with fun new quizzes. Although originality is hard to come by these days, I can assure you that you'll have fun.

<hr>

General Rules
Please read these carefully.

Deadlines
The game starts on Sunday, 9 April. All deadlines will be in BST (GMT+1), and occur Sunday night (may be changed depending on my circumstances). Please check these carefully so you don't miss a round. If you only have Internet access from work, you might want to make sure you send your answers to me the Friday before the deadline. And don't forget about timezones. For your reference, this post was originally made at 1.07pm BST.

The Games
The game will most likely consist of 5 rounds; each round will run for one week. There will be a variety of questions, they can be still images, animated images, audio clips, text-based puzzles, or whatever I can think of. Each round will (most likely) have a maximum possible score of 20 points, unless I decide to change the previous concept. The winner at the end will be the team that has accumulated the highest total score (duh!). Tiebreakers will be provided, if necessary.

Teams
Anyone is eligible to play; newbies, oldies, doesn't matter. You can play solo if you want, but I would prefer teams of two (to minimise the amount of score-checking I have to do). Ask in this thread if anyone wants to team up with you, and I'll keep a list of the teams in this post. You may join in late if you want, and you may play sporadically if you don't feel like dedicating too much of your time to the game.

Playing
All guesses must be PM'd to me. You may submit as many guesses as you please, but only your last set of guesses will count towards your score. Please put the round name in the subject line of your PM.

"Cheating"
When it comes to using various resources, I ask that you be reasonable in who and what you ask for help. I won't call it cheating, but if everyone went out and Google'd every question, that would pretty much destroy any enjoyment I get from running these games. Yes, I am using certain online sources in compiling these, and most answers can probably be found out there. You may of course use Google the way you would with the Invisibles. You may do keyword searches at IMDb and use GIS to confirm any guesses you might have. But please be reasonable. And don't worry if you don't get a perfect score; that's not the point. Just have fun.

Absolutely No Whining
Yes, I learned something from the Smilla's Sense of Snow incident. Then last year I had a screenshot from The Party that some people (unfairly) complained about. At least neither of them was Kramer vs. Kramer. I put a lot of time and hard work into making and running this game, so no fucking whining. Your ass will be kicked by kinggrl and whipped by Punisher. And not in a nice way either.

Contestants
Mark It Zero (alan smithee & AlottaFagina)
Team Giggity Giggity Goo (joe & tahm)
Batman & knarf

Rules
- You may not use any outside source! No Google, no IMDb, no asking friends on family, and absolutely no fast-forwarding through your DVD. Only guesswork based on your team's memory is allowed. You can not sit down to watch the movie, and you can not ask anyone else to do it for you. Just guess.
- I am using my DVD version, which of course may differ from yours, but it should be essentially the same on all versions.
- PM me you answer in the form H:MM:SS, e.g. 2:28:31 (2 hours, 28 minutes, 31 seconds)
- As soon as I get one entry from each team, I will reveal the answer and the winners will be announced.

Previous Rounds

Round 5 - Cinematic Bacon
Deadline: Closed

Intro
I'm too tired to write a proper intro, so instead I'll just tell you what you need to know, which I bet is all you really want to know anyway...
What I've done below is select twenty actors, then I've picked screenshots from two of each of their movies. I extracted the head from the first screenshot and slapped it in the second screenshot. You don't have to tell me who the actor is (that much should be obvious), but rather name both films. Meaning, you have to give me forty movie titles in your answer.

Hint
There is a pretty obvious connection between the questions which, if you can spot it (and you should), will help. The name of the game should point you in the right direction.
Answer: The connection was that each actor had been in a movie with the person in the preceding question, as well as the succeeding question. I.e. Tom Cruise has been in a movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and he's also been in a movie with Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Jason Leigh has been in a movie with Adrien Brody, and she's also been in a movie with Christian Bale. In some cases, the "connecting" movie was the one shown, but this was a coincidence. The connection was simply that these 20 actors form a closed Bacon-link.

Round 4 - Long Live the 80s!
Deadline: Closed

Intro
Today is the birthday of a dear friend of mine. I forgot to send a card this year, and I felt guilty, so I created this quiz in honour of her as a gift. Lame, perhaps, but isn't it the thought that counts?
Anyway, she's a bit of an 80s geek (something I never was, and never will be), so this round is all 80s, baby. Below is a potpurri of items and people from various movies, all made in the 80s. If you're unsure, check IMDb for the year of release; they're all listed as being released between 1980 and 1989. You just have to tell me which movies they belong to.

Notes to the answers
Kevin Costner & baseball bat - Yes, it's Kevin Costner with a baseball bat. No, that doesn't make it Field of Dreams. Really.
Yoda - Yes, I accepted Jedi, even though it's technically wrong.
The sword - You can smite me and perform voodoo on me; that does not make this sword the Excalibur. It's close, but no cigar.
Superman in the sky - Seriously, I put it in the rules to check year of release. The first Superman movie was released in 1979. You only have yourself to blame here.
USS Enterprise - Even though I wanted Khan as the answer, I was told that might be incorrect, and I don't know shit about Trek, so I was kind on the scoring.

I'm in. If anyone was planning on playing on their own, then I would be a good addition for them. I don't do too well on these, so you would be able to take all the credit!!

The last one was a blast, so I'm in.

As everyone else, it seems I'll need a partner.

I left Ze hanging during the last part of Big Game II. (I apologize again Ze) But if you wanna give it another go, I wont let you down this time. If not, that's cool too.

You're right. They were called The Cool Hands. No wonder they beat the competition.

I'm totally in, but I may have to go for play-along-alone status as April is exam month and I don't want to leave someone with all the work.

Unless of course, someone is looking for just that sort of partner.

No random draws. We'll let people grab eachother, and signups will be open for all 11 days until the game starts. If you fancy teaming up with someone, just ask them.
