The New FilmWise Forums

#1 Post by Nunis » 26 Oct 2008, 06:24

There we go, folks. The upgrade went smoothly last night and now I'm just putting the finishing touches on the new forums. Most things will look and behave as they did before, but I wanted to give you an update on what's been done and what it means.

- I've deleted all old spam users, which means the forums should be a little bit quicker.
- I've created a new tag which should be used for all movie spoilers.

Code: Select all
Put your spoiler text here
- I've moved some stuff around, as you've probably noticed. Basically I've just created some subforums so it's easier to read the frontpage and find what you're looking for. Most all threads should be where they've always been, with a few exceptions. Invisibles-talk is now its own forum, so as not to clutter up the Stuffages forum. And you've of course noticed I've created this new forum which will be used for News and Announcements. If there are unread topics in this forum, I suggest you always read them.

New stuff you can do includes (but is not limited to):

In your User Control Panel
- Manage subscriptions: manage which forums and/or topics you're watching
- Bookmarks: you can now bookmark any topic for further reference and quickly find them in the control panel
- Birthday: if you set your birthdate in your profile, you can be listed on the front page when it's your birthday. It also lets other know how old you are. You can of course leave this blank if you want.
- Choose how to display topics: in your Board preferences, you can choose to sort topics on some other criteria than last post time.
- Friends/foes: I don't know how useful this feature is but there is something called the Friends and Foes list, where you can add people. The most useful feature is probably being able to see which of your Friends are online.

Private Messages
- You can now send the same PM to more than one person, and do Blind Carbon Copies. You can also attach files, although there are some file restrictions (more on these later).
- As with posts, you can write and save drafts for PMs.
- You can create folders in your Inbox, and set up rules to automatically forward PMs following these rules to one of your folders. You can have a maximum of 4 folders.

Posting
- Pick an icon for your topic if you choose (please don't abuse this)
- More choices for font colour (please don't abuse this either; make sure the text is legible)
- Attach files (some restrictions apply); will come in handy in quizzes when you want to post an image. We're going to do this on a trial basis; if it's abused, I will remove it.

Other
- The search has been improved. You can now choose which forums to search and where to look for your text string. I've also lowered the limit so you can search for two-letter words and two-letter usernames (you're welcome, JJ and Ze).
- HTML code now doesn't work. This means some old posts may look a bit funky, so if it's an important post you can let me know and I will edit the post in question. Apart from that, you just need to be aware that posting HTML code will no longer work.
- Avatar dimensions are still the same. The max you can have is 200 pixels wide, 300 pixels tall.

Stuff I'll do over the next few days
One thing people have been requesting for years is for me to add custom smileys from the Smiley Suggestion thread. I will do this in the next few days.

Anyway, that was quite a lot of information. If you have any questions, please post them in here or send me a PM. Same goes if you find something that looks wrong and you think I need to look at it.

Thanks again for your patience. I hope you enjoy the new and improved FilmWise Forums.

We were able to search in selected forums before. Is it possible to search in selected topics?
What about one lettered usernames? Like T?

I haven't found anything on that yet, but I'm looking for a way to do this. And what I meant was that you can choose to search in, say "only Movie Madness and Quizwise"; you couldn't do that before.

It's possible to lower it to one digit, but it will so significantly slow down the search I didn't think it was worth it. Is there anyone else with a 1-letter username, and do we really ned to search for T's posts?

Is is my imagination, or do screenshots look bigger and of a much better definition and quality too? Also, it's great to have the :green: immediately to hand.

I don't think we did, but I could be mistaken. What post(s) are you referring to?

Forum Changes 2

#17 Post by bratzks » 26 Oct 2008, 13:36

Question about user profiles:

When looking at certain user's profiles, their "User statistics" are broken down into; Total Posts then Most active forum and finally Most active topic. Why isn't it all of us? Speed issue?

I had noticed that too, and I can't tell you why. I'll keep looking into it.

Found out why. For performance reasons, it doesn't do that for people who have over 5k posts. But there's a way around it. I'll try to solve it. If it's not too slow, we can certainly keep that feature if I can get it working. If for no other reason than I'm curious to see how many of JJ's posts are in Open Ended.

Also, see if you can have it count the number of posts that are lies.
