Um, what the hell is going on with this show?

It is beginning to seem they aren't trying to tell a TV series version of the novels' timeline.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, I'm still catching up on Season 1. But I heard that this is planned as, ideally, a seven season show, covering all four novels. Not sure if it's straying from that now, but I'm exciting to get into Season 2.

Of course, now that you're on the case, those seven seasons seem even less likely, so maybe they've shortened their timeline. :mishchief:

I'll wait for you to catch up. If it's covering all four (?) novels, then I'm really confused. The last novel was a prequel, peeking into Hannibal's childhood and younger years. I've not read that one, as it felt like Thomas Harris has sold out at that point. Hannibal (book 3) was such a great finishing piece.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, seven seasons to cover the trilogy sounds cool. I'm still watching, but I think the writers are making some horribly wrong choices in the second season.

I have not read the books... but I am enjoying this season far more than the first!

Read all four. Yes Hannibal Rising was a bit of a "sell-out", especially compared to the other 3.

Have only watched the 1st season, and I find it to be more of a "mash-up" of the books as opposed to any retelling of the story, and not a very good one at that. Perhaps I'll take a peek of season 2

Haven't read the books, but I've enjoyed both seasons.

It's really more like a reboot than anything. Same characters, some events/dialog taken from the movies/books, but different story altogether. I can see not liking it if you expect it to be a more faithful representation. If you don't like season 1, I wouldn't expect you to feel differently about season 2, but I think it's great.

I find the story isn't the thing that impresses me most about the show anyway. Although I like how they are telling it... I find the acting, cinematography and tone much more entertaining. It's the creepiest/coolest cooking show on TV!

I enjoyed season 1. I remember thinking the end of the season was very interesting, and couldn't fathom where they were going to take it from there.

This second season is going in a totally different direction of the characters and basic timeline of the novels/films. This is what's really bugging me. Rebooting the story is totally fine. Adding extra characters and backstory is great. Making the show too much of a departure from the original timeline is a huge gamble, and leaves me very conflicted with the series. I love watching the show, but am often simultaneously intrigued and frustrated.

Perfect example of my coinciding intrigue and frustration:
I love that Mason (complete with face) and Margo Verger ate on the show, and Freddie Lounds as a female character has been fun to watch, but the Tooth Fairy killed Freddie for the inflammatory story published about him. Now Freddie won't even be present for that story arc, and...
Spoiler
Will is turning into Hannibal's protege instead of his undoing? Did he really take Freddie steak to Hannibal so they could east her for dinner?

I don't think you're supposed to be sure that he killed Freddie. Personally I don't think he did but I don't know. I think one of the coolest reasons for the reboot-mentality is you legitimately don't know what will happen next.

...and that's part of my conflicting feelings with the show.
Spoiler
Part of me thought that Freddie could still be alive and in witness protection (or something) and all of that was staged to toy with Hannibal. I dismissed this because no one really believes Will about Hannibal at this point. Jack is starting to suspect, as is Dr. Bloom, but they are still equally suspect of Will's state of mind. Neither of the lab techs believe Will, but would still follow Jack's orders. There isn't enough faith in Will, or at least faith in his conviction of Hannibal's guilt, for anyone to believably go along with a sting of this manner.

In an unrelated plot point, not really spoilerific, assuming that we've all seen the other 3-5 films (Manhunter and Hannibal Rising being electives), I am already looking forward to watching Hannibal take Mason's face. That actor plays the Mason character very well.

Apparently they are planning s4 to be red dragon and s5 to be silence of the lambs, if everything comes together. That's pretty cool.

I saw Mads Mikkelsen's old, hairy man boobs last night. Does that count? :?
