I think I'm going to book one of these for my wife's birthday. Anything I should know ahead of time?

We have a couple of different options here in OKC. One is $20 per person and the room holds up to 10. Another one is for 2-6 people and is a flat rate of $75. I'm leaning towards the latter, mainly because I'd prefer to ensure I'm only playing with friends.

Each place also has multiple experiences, each with varying posted success rates. Do you ever do these in back to back sessions or after one are you tired of thinking and ready to hit the bar instead?

What are some examples of the kinds of puzzles you typically have to solve?

I wish I could fly in Smithee or one of you other smarties to be my ringer in case we get stuck.

I recently de one with work. Mine was an intergalactic attack I had to stop. It was puzzles which gave combinations to unlock things (doors boxes etc) and took around an hour.
What some do is have two identical rooms so you race against someone. I absolutely loved it and wanna do more.

As for types of puzzles, we had anagrams, hidden maps, even a periscope that had to be made.

We've looked into these in our area, and have friends willing to go, but have yet to make arrangements. Sounds like a blast, though.

You don't need Smithee or SF or JJ. If you had them the night would be like this.

I've never done multiple rooms in a day, but don't see why you couldn't. They aren't too taxing.

Puzzles are typically solvable, but involve understanding of basic puzzle skills - crosswords, mazes, color-by-number, word search, etc. You should be able to recognize what you're supposed to do on most of it...

...but escaping usually revolves around figuring out a "twist" that is the leap that's often hard to do. It might involve combining some of the puzzles you've already seen in an unusual way, or applying additional information from the room / game settings / etc. to one of the puzzles you've already figured out (or thought you had). If done well, it's still solvable and very satisfying to figure out before the curtain closes. If not done well, it's a "that was kind of stupid" moment after you lose (or a "that was kind of stupid" moment that you figure out). Just keep on your toes and try to think outside of the room -- realize there's a larger game being played than just the simple puzzles in front of your face.

Of course I enjoy these things a lot.

I appreciate the tips. We're booked for this one next month:

Area 405
Hidden in an underground basement, secret experiments are being conducted. Will you be able to find an artifact and escape, or lose track of time and become the next test subject?

Escape Percentage 20%

Dammit. You're right. I've only been a dad a few years. I'm still getting the hang of it.

We failed but we were this close. It was quite a bit of fun. I'm looking forward to doing it again and trying a different room.

The premise was that we were locked in a secret alien research lab after a contamination outbreak. We managed to get several different locks open, decoded a cipher and accessed some hidden computer files. We also waded through tons and tons of irrelevant data such as lab reports, xrays, audio files, etc.

Spoiler
The final step we failed was to recognize a device had heat sensitive paint and had to be handled vigorously to reveal the final code.

We had a super-diverse group that reminded me of something I'd seen in countless horror movies. We had 2 white guys, one jock and one fat guy cracking jokes the whole time, a legally blind Latin teacher (who was excellent as breaking the code), a black female paramedic instructor/poison control worker (who was our mvp by cracking 2 of the locks,) and 2 computer pros- a german/asian girl and a transsexual Iraq war vet. It was great.

It's not exactly the same as an in-person experience, and it certainly has a higher budget, but I recommend watching Race to Escape on the Science Channel for a flavor of what these things may be like. The bad time-pressure decision making is a hallmark of all escape games.

A local theater group is putting on a version of DC Dead here next month. I really want to do it. From what I have read, its an escape room type experience where you have a limited time to survive and find a cure. Also you get to shoot zombies with a nerf gun or they'll infect you, as well.

We bought tickets last week. I'm pretty excited and hopeful that they can pull it off. Here's the description from the website:

Quote:
by Rex Daugherty; based on DC Dead by Rex Daugherty and Vaughn Irving

Reduxion Theatre Company wants to surprise you this Halloween. By pushing boundaries and subverting your expectations of live theatre, Reduxion brings to the Civic Center Music Hall a completely immersive "zombie survival experience:" OKC Dead. Based on the 2014 Washington D.C. independent stage hit, DC Dead, this interactive live event shambles into OKC this October. Adapted especially for Reduxion Theatre by creator Rex Daugherty, this choose-your-own-adventure experience has been described as "Sleep No More meets The Walking Dead meets Grand Guignol Theatre of Horror."

OKC Dead will make your heart race and your arm take aim as you escape zombies in real time, solve puzzles with your team and race to find the cure and save the city. Survival teams of eight enter the adventure, every 20 minutes beginning at 7:00 pm each Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 8-31. Survivors get a chance to solve the mystery, while victims make their Zombie transformations. This event involves Zombie tagging, nerf guns and walking up and down stairs. Safety goggles are provided. Shows are approximately 45 minutes in length. Recommneded for ages 14 and older. "Survive the infection. Find the cure. Save the city."
