Actually, you'd probably like Peter Jackson's commentary then. It's not really technical. He goes into where things were shot and cool stuff like "Look! This is where Viggo breaks his toe! We left it in the movie!"

It's really entertaining. (well... I thought so anyway)

I'll have to check it out then.

The George Lucas commentaries are also great as he doesnt get technical at all either. He simply tells all kinds of stuff about the Star Wars universe. Really interesting stuff.

Really? I started watching The Phantom Menace commentary one time, and was totally bored. I'll have to give it another chance, I guess.

I just watched the Fight Club commentary with the author (my favorite- Chuck Pahliniuk) and the screenwriter.

It was really, really boring.

I was disappointed.

Anyone know if any of the other 23489234 FC commentaries are any good?

I know I watched the cast one w/Fincher, too. The fact that I can't remember anything about it is probably not a good sign in it's favor.

Sounds like it's a good thing I spent the extra $ on the 2-disc version.

The articles are hilarious! I'm actually considering renting some of these horrible movies just to see how bad the commentary tracks really are.

I just watched Evil Dead with audio commentary off Bruce Campbell...
It's pretty funny as he explains how the movie is made, and how bad his own acting performance is... :D

I LOVE the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVD commentaries. If you play the drinking game at the same time it's even better as you are sloshed half way through the film.

I don't really watch DVDs with the commentary on unless someone specifically recommends something. I was confused to all hell by Donnie Darko, even after watching it 3 times. My friend told me to watch it with the directors commentary - and it explained it all.

Think I'll go and watch the Holy Grail with commentary. After I've finished laughing at the Lego song video!

I like the commentaries on that one. There's one with Gilliam/Jones, and another with Palin/Cleese/Idle. (I prefer the latter, FWIW.) There are some cool subtitle features on it as well. (As written by Shakespeare, and a Japanese-to-English translation.) Pretty funny stuff.

I'm 50/50 on commentaries... I prefer to only buy DVDs that have a lot of special features (it's a paranoid thought process that says if this DVD has "Interactive Menu" and "Chapter Selection" listed as special features, don't buy because someday soon there will be a collector's edition with deleted scenes, featurettes, and yes commentaries)

I usually try to watch all of the special features that time allows. Since I work for Blockbuster, I get 5 free DVD rentals a week, so it is sometimes hard to fit the 5 movies in, let alone their features (I write this as I watch History vs. Hollywood on THE LAST SAMURAI)

As someone already mentioned, I find Commentaries great to watch while doing other things (like hunting for answers on these online movie quizzes) because you don't always have to be watching the movie. Some of the worst commentaries, in my opinion, are ones that feature no extra stories. SCHOOL OF ROCK's children comm, for instance, consists basically of the kids quoting lines (that are coming up), "I love this scene," and telling us that Jack Black is funny. Some box sets I own, like Simpsons and Family Guy, have great commentaries on some episodes talking about guest stars, story ideas, etc. I rented disc 2 and 3 of IN LIVING COLOR a few weeks back and the two commentaries by Tommy Davidson were horrible, with the last half of the 2nd commentary almost silent since he had little else to say. He basically just kept reminding us how "original" the idea of ILC was at the time and how funny some of the people were.

I think I watched one of the FIGHT CLUB commentaries, but I cannot remember which one or if it was any good which is disheartening as well... But I will most likely always give them a chance (I still want the Special Edition FIGHT CLUB even if the commentaries are bad)

I just watched the commentary on Scary Movie 3, and it was soooo much better than the movie by itself.

In this week's Onion:

Commentary Tracks of the Blessed

"In a twist on our regular 'Commentary Tracks Of The Damned' feature, The Onion A.V. Club revisited some of our favorites to consider what makes a great commentary track great."

The poker fans around here may be interested in what they have to say about the Rounders commentary track.

That list is flawed due to the lack of Kevin Smith Commentay tracks.

For they are the greatest.

way back on Sept. 16/2003, alan smithee wrote:Off the top of my head, these excellent movies have my least favorite and favorite commentaries:

Interesting coincidence.....My husband just watched the "Airplane!" commentary this weekand and I was wondering what you thought about it, Smithee (he's in complete agreement with your assessment)....

Off the top of my head, I enjoyed the commentaries for "Jerry Maguire" and "Donne Darko" as well as "Solaris", not because it's one of my favourite films but because Steven Soderbergh is so interesting (the less said about producer James Cameron's subtle misogyny the better :-? ).

Did anyone catch how Carrie-Anne Moss starts talking during the Matrix commentary, then disappears for over an hour only to return during the last 15 minutes of the movie? I found this weird.

Favorite commentaries:
Repo Man
Excalibur
Looney Tunes Golden Collection (some are hit and miss)
The Thing
Any Ridley Scott commentary
Fight Club
Lord of the Rings

I haven't heard Fight Club's commentary but would love to. I want that DVD so badly.

I listened to part of The Matrix commentary but got bored.

I'm looking for a good site with reviews/descriptions of audio commentaries. Commentary DVD and Rate That Commentary seem to be the most popular, but they seem somewhat incomplete. Does anyone know of others?
