Star Wars on DVD finally

#1 Post by Nunis » 10 Feb 2004, 03:46

Star Wars Comes To DVD

Oh happy, happy day!
10 February 2004

Image

That's it: cancel your birthday, tear up those tickets to Hawaii and tell your partner that this year's anniversary will just have to fall by the wayside. There's only one date that matters this year and it is September 21.

We've waited (oh, how we've waited), we've cursed, we've begged, we've prayed to the gods and finally all our wishes have come true: the original Star Wars trilogy has received its release date at last. Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will finally join your collection in glorious anamorphic widescreen with digital sound that will have you duck as the TIE fighters soar overhead.

The collection will see three discs for the three films with a fourth disc expected to include a new documentary on the series as well as unseen footage, and other bonus materials.

This announcement comes as a particularly pleasant surprise given that George Lucas originally planned to wait until Episode III was ready for DVD before releasing the originals. The only question you might ask is whether the DVD release will be the theatrical cuts or the 1997 Special Editions. We'd have to say that it's likely to be neither. Lucas has filmed a number of extra scenes in the last few years, all for insertion into the first three films. We imagine that this will be complimented with much of the additional CGI that populated the Special Editions but let's hope that some of the 97 tweaks - Greedo shooting first, for example - are left on the cutting room floor.

The films won't be sold individually but this box set will be such an essential purchase that does anyone really care?

Altogether now: 'buh-buh-buh-buuuh baaaah, buh-buh-buh-baaaah baaaah'.

Like. I. Give. A. Flying. Fuck.

Lucas has milked this franchise to death and it's making me begin to hate the original holy triity. Will this bearded fucktard please just leave it how it was! And more to the point why would anyone buy them? Surely everyone already has them on VHS at least once by now! I have the speacial ed. box set as well as taped off the telly circa 1984-88, the ancient comercials being the best things about them! (Test drive the stylish new 1984 Austin Monteago!)
I hate purity. Hate goodness. I don't want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone corrupt.

well actually my VCR has finally made the transition to Storage after I got my second DvD player and im also out of AV cables to hook it up so I techniclly cant watch it on VHS.

But you guys are correct it does need to be reverted back to the old SFX version.

I just can't belive they took out the original Ewok song that almost made me cry.

Never saw them - I didn't care for the Ewoks, but I think I'd fallen out of the target audience for Jedi (16 by then)

UpcomingDiscs.com says it's all the SEs (so you're screwed (or need a VHS or Laserdics copy) if you wanna see the original footage). Expect one of the Lucas kids to sell the original versions on DVD once he runs ILM into the ground.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

OK, so I never did get around to buying the movies on VHS. I'm now considering buying them, but I'm not sure what release date I should look for. If any of you have the original release of the Trilogy (before Lucas went all mad scientist on them), could you tell me what the copyright date is on them?
You see, Hopsi, you don't know very much about girls. The best ones aren't as good as you probably think they are and the bad ones aren't as bad. Not nearly as bad.

The "new-and-improved" a/k/a "the royally fucked up" ones came out in '97.

You'll want this trilogy boxed set... it's the VHS THX editions...

These came out just before the release of the special editons... so it's the original trilogy... no additions... but with improved THX sound and upgraded quality.

Or you can go with this... the last Collector's Edition boxed set... not THX... but still the originals.

 George Lucas has ruined all my childhood memories
 Why can't that spawn of Satan Lucas release the original trilogy?

People, please. It's Star Wars on DVD. I'd rather have the orginal version, but the SE's are fine. It's still the same freaking movie. In fact, the changes he made in Empire are EXTREMELY unnoticeable.

What I want is cast commentary and for deleted scenes from ANH to be on that fourth disc.

What really irks me is that the man just won't stop tinkering with the films. In his defense, plenty of directors release director's cuts of their films that are supposed to be closer to their "original artistic vision" and such. But Lucas has been filming more scenes in the last few years?! Ya kinda get the feeling that this man is going to be reworking these films until the day he dies. Just let it go, George! They're fine as is!
