See Han Solo shoot first!

#1 Post by Brodieman » 03 May 2006, 18:29

The Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy is coming to DVD for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st.

http://comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14373

Lucasfilm has announced that this September fans can look forward to the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic "Star Wars" trilogy!

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy "Star Wars" as it first appeared in 1977, "Empire" in 1980, and "Jedi" in 1983.

See the title crawl to "Star Wars" before it was known as "Episode IV"; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. The international release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

That said, I probably won't be double dipping for this one unless the price is crazy cheap.

From the thread's title, I thought Lucas was going to milk this franchise some more, by working on a porn sequel.

Han Solo shot first and Jim Fell?
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Is this the version that Lucas said will positively, undoubtedly, absolutely, definitely never be released?
Lionel Hutz, aka Miguel Sanchez, aka Dr. Nguyen van Thoc, was paid $8 for his 32 hours of babysitting.

He was glad to get it.

Yep. The one that no longer exist. The one where Darth Vader is some old dude, instead of some young dude who can't act.

Fuck you Lucas, I already caved in and bought the new ones.

Now he just needs to stick this release in a mega ultra super collector's limited edition box with the three new "movies", and he's almost on level seven of hell.

I hadn't caved yet, so this is the set for me! Yay!
You see, Hopsi, you don't know very much about girls. The best ones aren't as good as you probably think they are and the bad ones aren't as bad. Not nearly as bad.

although i didn't buy them, got them as a gift. i won't be buying this though on principle, plus i just find i can't enjoy the film as much anymore. what really pisses me off though is that this is exactly how i said they should have been released in the first place...though i'm sure i'm not the only one who has said it...a 2-disc affair with both versions like the Legend dvd, seems obvious that this is how they should be released ...i wish i could jump in the Delorean and pinpoint the exact moment in time that Lucas's blood was replaced with a viscous black puss.

I never caved.... and I am happy he's doing this... I knew he would... as soon as he realized he has no other ideas to make money on besides Indiana Jones 4.... that he would release the originals WITH the version he wanted everyone to buy originally. So now I can get both in one set.

IMDb wrote:'Star Wars' Fans Upset About DVD Plans for Original Trilogy
Despite earlier reports that Lucasfilm would be re-releasing the original unedited theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars movies on DVD, it now turns out that they will be copied from the laserdiscs of the films released in the mid'90s, formatted for the conventional TV screen and not wide-screen "letterbox" versions. The revelation has provoked anger among Star Wars fans, expressed on such Internet sites as www.thedigitalbits.com, and www.hometheaterforum.com. VideoBusiness.com quoted Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh as saying, "We hoped that by releasing the original movies as a bonus disc, it would be a way to give the fans something that is fun. We certainly didn't want to be become a source of frustration for fans."

So this tells me... that they are trying to get people to buy this edition thinking that "Pan & Scan DVD of the originals is better then no originals at all"...

Then he will make it up to us again by later releasing them in widescreen for a limited time...

And therefore his revenge for us making him relase them will be complete since now everyone owns them 3 times.

I've still got a VHS player and the originals on tape. I wonder what they'd sell for on ebay. The tapes, not the player.

I've got the VHS tapes they released in the UK around Christmas 1996 (just before the updated originals were re-released in the cinema), which as far as I know, are untampered with.

Damn you, George Lucas. Damn you to hell. He'll probably release a special HD version in a few years as well

I'll probably get the DVDs, but only if they are cheap, and a widescreen format would be better.
Statler: Well, how do you like the film?
Waldorf: I've seen detergents leave a better film than this.

I just picked up the widescreen, limited-edition set. The original version seems to look widescreen to me. The case says it's a 4:3 Letterbox format. Oh, and Han does shoot first.

Not until Episode V.
