So if 8 years ago Bwad was 13*, it makes him 21 now, But he decided to become a firefighter because of 9/11 which was 13 years ago, so basically when he was 8, but he met Toni in training...oh, my head hurts.

*This strip flashes back to when Luann was 10, and she just turned 18, so the flashback was from 8 years ago.

We're talking comics years here, dawgs, and that has nothing to do with reality. In 9 Chickweed Lane, they have spent almost a year to tell a story that takes place on D-Day.

Don't even get me started on 9CL. I know Comic Time is not normal time, in fact next year Luann the strip will be 40 and since Luann was 12 in the first strip, she ages 1 year for ever 10 strip years. It's just one of the pitfalls when you mention something from real life in the strip, though 9/11 is probably a good exception.

Still, Bwad being just 21 seems a bit young, but it is possible. It just seems so long since he met Toni.

Okay let's start off with the current "storyline". Oh wait, there is no storyline, or at least there hasn't been for about 3 month now. All it is is Martine and Bill walking around doing the same thing over and over again. McEldowney pretty much lost his spot in the plot when he started to have Martine seduce the German soldiers before she straight up killed them, and it doesn't seem like he cares about getting back on track. This is supposed to be D-Day but all the German soldiers they have met are very nonchalant considering that they are in Normandy and an invasion is taking place. Then what the fuck is the deal with Martine and this kid? It's like the fourth time she has tied him up and stripped him to be "bait" for the German, does she wake up each morning and wait for this kid to come by? By the way, wouldn't the Germans get suspicious if they kept finding dead soldiers all over the place? And isn't Martine always worried about running out of ammunition, but then she goes around ambushing Germans and then today she left her "signature" by shooting both of the kid's ears?

And then there are the Burbers and their thralls, um, I mean every male in the strip beside Thorax, who is batshit crazy. Everyone of the men exist only to serve the Burbers and if that doesn't happen we see the maw of death, for example...
Image

And if you ready Pibgorn you know Brooke McEldowney is pretty much a pervert. He gets away with it because all his character only have hand sex.

Great, now Funky Winkerbean is taking lessons from Luann and switching to new story lines before the old story lines are finished.

Coach Bull has decided to take a student that was in detention to make him wear a mascot costume, then hijinks ensues...
Image
Image

He got felt up by all the cheerleaders, but not in a good way.

Image

A flu epidemic strikes the school so that out of all the guys on the team and all the students in the stands Bull can't find 11 guys to take the field and so recruits the dentention guy.

Image

But will the scapegoat (yes, the mascot of the school is a scapegoat) be a hero or...

Image

And is he even still alive?

Image

Tune in next week for the celebrati...oh damn it, not Ancient Funky. This strip is much better when it deals with high school.

Image

I guess, technically the week did have a payoff in that he caught the ball, but it would have been better if it was an official and not a teammate to claim they won, and then maybe see a celebration, but then again, this is the Funkyverse, nothing good is supposed to ever happen., so, Rest in Peace crochet capped dentention student, we will miss you.

None of the pictures show up on my screen, so I'll take your word about the ensuing suckage.

Yeah, Funky Winkerbean isn't on gocomics.com so I have to get them from a different place. I'll look for ones that actually work.

Oh hey! Looks like Bernice is starting to have fu...Holy Crap, what is that guy doing to Asian Chick in the background! You can't show that in a family newspaper!

And I am totally okay with this strip going full on Bernice and leaving Luann back at Community College.

I'm not sure if I care where the strip heads. It's just all so terrible.

Where did Bernice get those speakers?

Not sure, but I think Blonde Drummer Guy might have brought them, he's the one that saw there was a "party" in Bernice's room. And speaking of that, that is a huge room if it can hold all those people in it.

Seedy guy in the back of a van with a "great deal," of course -- it's a great way in college to separate city kids from suburb kids posing as city kids.

OMG..I think I figured it out. Tiffany has the hots for the "new" Bernice. First she helped her get a new look. Now she is trying to get Bernice to loosen up, with flirting and talk of being Party Dorm Gurlz saying things like "We want WAY more than that" as she lounges suggestively on the couch, then the innocent college experimentation can begin.

Wow, that is a long way to go for a Casablanca joke. This story has literally been going on for over 13 months. It started in November of last year and has cover the first few days of the Normandy Invasion.

Hey! New characters! We have the neanderthal jock, the goth kid and the asshole art teacher. How do we know he is an asshole? His name ZÉBO, he is bald with a pencil thin mustache and he is wearing an ascot. To compete with Moony Uni, Pittsville Community College had to ratchet up the facilty assholeness to compensate...oh my God, what the hell is happening!? :o

Image

Spoiler for Strips from earlier in the week

And he did this, although this could actually go to the pro side of the pro/con list.

The text in the first pane 'This lady gets an A in "open to new ideas"' sounds like an intro to Luann venturing into pornographic performance 'art' next...

This is going to turn into a remake of Fame, isn't it? Poor Coco.

9 Freaking Chickweed Lane makes Luann look like Bloom County.

Image

Okay, not only has this storyline been going on for literally 16 months, but none of the characters are remotely likeable. The guy being shot first showed up as a Nazi who became a double agent who might have been a triple agent who went back to being a double agent then threatened the woman he loved with a gun he was physically unable to shoot to argue about a movie (Casablanca 1942) that neither one of them could possibly have seen in a small town in Nazi occupied France. during this storyline he has magically appeared in England and then back in France, then back in England and back in France, both times he went back to France, he found the girl and guy in the last frame withing a single strip, even after the allies have been unable to find them at all. The girl shot off both of his index finger and left scar on his cheeks the seem to reappear snf disappear at the whim of the author. And the man is coping with multiple personality disorder, one day he is helping them out, the next he is trying to shoot them.

The girl is a double agent spy who has perfect aim. The American Sniper would be in awe. Those scars and missing fingers the guy sometimes has, were curtesy of her pistol, from distance. She has also several times clipped men's ears on both sides with well aimed bullets. There is blood on her shoulder beacuse she stared down a sniper, got shot and then shot him left handed in his head while he was in his sniper's nest with a pistol through his helmet. She is a one woman assasination squad with a body count in the 30s probably, all on this single trip to Paris days after D-Day. Half of the men she has killed at least got to see her naked when she killed them. Which isn't bad if you don't look at her butter face.

The other guy is her English handler who, for some reason, went to France to find her, got hit in the head and thinks he is in Casablanca.

And the shooter? Well, he was shooting at the girl because several times...let me say this again...SEVERAL TIMES she had met him while the girl and the Casablanca guy were trying to get to Paris...SEVERAL TIMES she knocked the kid out, stripped him and left him in the middle of the street, you know, for reasons. SEVERAL TIMES. And at one of these times did the clipping his ears with bullet shots thing.

So, we endured a horrid story line for over 18 months just to find out how the mother got her name.

That's what it looks like. You know, because Bill would never have told her. And another fuck you from the artist: Grandma Burber was in New York the last time we saw her, talking to Momma Burber on the phone from the grave site.
