X-Men: First Class (2011)

Director: Matthew Vaughn
Cast: TBD

Genre: Action | Adventure
Release Date: 03 June 2011

Plot Summary: The beginning of the X-Men saga, following Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr before they became Professor X and Magneto, respectively. The story sees Xavier and Lensherr working together with other mutants to fight off a great threat. During this battle, the two mutants grow apart, ultimately resulting in the war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1270798/
Trailer:

Batman says: I'm quite hopeful for this one. Vaughn is a good director and a stripped down story pitting the first five X-Men against the Brotherhood should make for a nice, compact story.

Vaughn Set to Deliver 'X-Men: First Class' in June 2011
by Ray Subers
May 4, 2010

20th Century Fox announced this afternoon that Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn will officially be taking on directing duties for X-Men: First Class, which is now scheduled for June 3, 2011.

Fox describes X-Men: First Class as the beginning of the X-Men saga, following Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr before they became Professor X and Magneto, respectively. The story sees Xavier and Lensherr working together with other mutants to fight off a great threat. During this battle, the two mutants grow apart, ultimately resulting in the war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

X-Men: First Class is the fifth entry in the X-Men series and second prequel, following last summer's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which opened to $85.1 million and ultimately closed with just under $180 million. The X-Men series began in 2000 with X-Men, which grossed $157.3 million. X2: X-Men United banked $214.9 million three years later, with 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand completing the initial trilogy with $234.4 million (the highest grossing entry in the series). Overall, the series has made over $1.5 billion worldwide.

Vaughn's Kick-Ass opened to $19.8 million last month and has made $42.7 million through its first three weekends in theaters. Vaughn, who previous directed Layer Cake and Stardust, is no stranger to the X-Men, as he was originally signed on to direct X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2005 before leaving the project due to creative differences.

With Thor (May 6), The Green Lantern (June 17) and The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22) already scheduled, Summer 2011 is shaping up to be a crowded one for big-budget superhero movies. The only other time four or more major superhero movies were released in one summer was 2008, which saw the debuts of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and The Dark Knight.

I was thinking of this same Fat Albert quote just the other day.

For all you younguns, the answer is "No class."

So it appears that Roman from Party Down wasn't the only one inspired by seeing a copy of X-Men #4 at a Hollywood charity auction.

OK, OK, OK, wait, who what?

I was enjoying the thought of a re-imagining of the early X-Men stories, but who the hell is Azazel? Why is Mystique there (and white)? Or Moira McTaggart, or even Havok?! And why are we seeing the second brotherhood represented (though I'll take any January Jones I can get - thank you for this).

And Magneto in the helmet looks pretty bad.

Really, beyond the poster, this is pretty disappointing.

:green: Except that it's got Matthew Vaughn at the helm. Hopefully he'll make a decent story from this even if he is ignoring the canon.

A few of my facebook friends have pointed out that young Magneto is from a short-lived series Hex. The set used for the school is apparently also from Hex. These friends are inclined to believe the entire cast could have been used to fill the shoes of several of the First Class characters.

Thanks for pointing this out. More on Hex can be found here.
I'd never heard of the series, but it also explains the existence of the character Azazel. This was the character played by Michael Fassbender on that show...

Near the end you see "Erik" pulling up the sub using his magneto powers, he is on a Black Bird that is somehow floating in mid air. It does not make sense and breaks at least one of Newton's laws. How do these people expect us to take these films seriously! Erik should be on the shoreline and then he could use his powers to pull up the sub up its damn obvious!!

But it was pretty cool seeing them use an "actual" Blackbird.

I still don't understand how that aircraft more than any other looks like its from a future time when it was actually made years ago

Meh. I don't know the characters from the comics, so other than Charles and Erik, I saw a whole bunch of people there who a) didn't mean anything to me and b) the trailer really told me nothing about.
