Batman 3 Has A Title
And you can cross off the Riddler

27 October 2010

Big news from the Batman camp in today’s L.A. Times: Christopher Nolan has revealed the name of the third film in his Gotham City trilogy. In July 2012, we’ll be queuing for The Dark Knight Rises.

Not only that, but in something of a bombshell, Nolan went on to dispell what many had begun to assume to be a given – “It won’t be the Riddler,” reports L.A.T.’s blog Hero Complex. So easy to get ahead of yourself, isn't it? Of course, true to form, the director wouldn’t reveal who it would be.

What Nolan seemed most interested in imparting was that he’s convinced Warner Bros. to keep telling his story in 2D, and to continue down the path of hi-def IMAX sequences. And he’ll get no argument from us on the subject – if it ain't broke, etc.

The post contains one other potentially juicy, enigmatic Nolan quote: “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.” From here, you can go down two schools of thought – 1) This is a straightforward, non-commital comment. 2) You can subscribe to the oft-chanted mantra that "In comic books, no-one is ever really dead" – and we lost two big characters in The Dark Knight. But then again, of course, that doesn’t – to date – really wash with the realistic leanings of the first two films. What was that about getting ahead of ourselves? Pah! Tish! Etc.!

I've heard the Riddler will not be in this film, and also, which is great news, it won't be in 3D.

I wanted Joseph gordon Levitt as the Riddler but we'll see what he does. Tom Hardy being rumoured is no surprise as basically everyone from Inception is gonna be rumoured to be in the film at some point.

This might be a real tough film for our heroic friend; I hope he stumbles upon a twin set of bathtubs near a forest or waterfall before time runs out.

Would that be after the running of the bulls?

Natalie Portman for Catwoman? Hell yeah, I'd buy that for a dollar

I'd love that casting

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

But if that happened, I couldn't say "dibs."

Maybe the catsuit doesn't come in a maternity model.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will appear in The Dark Knight Rises

Role unknown as yet

By Josh Winning | Feb 2nd 2011

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is increasingly one of the most interesting actors working in Hollywood, which would explain why Chris Nolan wants to keep him close by casting him in The Dark Knight Rises.

The pair have just worked on Nolan’s other massive film Inception, and Deadline report that Gordon-Levitt “will be in [Rises] when Nolan starts production this spring”.

Who’ll he be playing? Nobody’s talking yet, though internet speculation has long been rife that Gordon-Levitt could tackle the role of cheeky villain The Riddler.

Knowing Nolan, though, he won’t want to bog down his last Batman gig with three new villains – he already has Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane.

For now, then, it’s a mystery. But still the kind of excellent news that has us feeling certain Rises can match Dark Knight for awesomeness. In fact, file this under ‘most awesome news we’ve heard this week’. Yes, really.

I've seen a great deal of Joseph Gordon-Levitt lately. IMHO, his best work, by far, was in Brick.

I wonder if he might consider casting Levitt as Robin? I wouldn't know if I should be happy or sad about that.

Levitt has to be the Riddler. If this is Nolans last, he's gonna make it awesome. Agree with SF about Brick being awesome as well.

Not even Nolan could make the boy wonder cool could he?

He never said he'd have a main part, just that JGL was in the movie. Maybe it's a minor part, which will be the setup for the Riddler in the next movie?

According to this article it won't be Robin, but I remember this story from before Begins came out. Begins and Dark Night happen in close proximity to each other, and I can't see a huge leap forward in time for the 3rd film, so I'm betting against a JGL Dick Grayson.

All I've heard so far is that Levitt could be playing Dr. Hugo Strange.

Personally, I think it's the type of character that fits the mold when it comes to Nolan's films.

I just read about that character in Wiki. Definitely an interesting character that could fit into Nolan's universe.

Agreed. Excellent timing with Arkham City set to release a little later this year. Gamers will get a real feel for this twisted character before seeing him on film.

JoBlo.com - WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AT THE DARK KNIGHT RISES WEB SITE?

To coincide with the DARK KNIGHT RISES Start of Production announcement yesterday (even though filming technically began about a week ago), Warner Bros. quietly launched the TDKR official website this morning. And? Your guess is as good as mine!

The page is completely black with absolutely no imagery. All there is at this point is a sound file (titled "rises") that plays automatically when the page is loaded. It's some kind of chanting like TEMPLE OF DOOM style. Or perhaps more correctly, Lazarus Pit style.

Of course this is all speculation at this point and no one really knows what this is just yet. Maybe someone will recognize the language and be able to decipher exactly what is going on here.

Head over to the site yourself and see if you can figure out exactly what's going on (or find something hidden that no one else has seen yet...).

Spoiler for Update 1
A poster on the Superhero Hype message boards was able to decipher the sound spectrum of the audio message and found something interesting hidden inside. A Twitter hashtag?...
Image

Spoiler for Update 2
Tweeting that hashtag apparently fills in an image hidden on the official site. See image below:
Image

Spoiler for Update 3
It's the first photo of Tom Hardy as Bane! The hashtags are still filling in but this is what you'll see when the mosaic is complete. Click to see in hi-res!
