Recommend Scary Movies

#1 Post by fishn4 » 14 Oct 2009, 11:47

That time of year. Horror is not my genre at all but I enjoy a good scare. Way too much crap out there though to sort through. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not really into the gore-porn films like Saw, Hostel, etc. The foreign scary movies and their remakes are also lame to me as well (The Ring, The Grudge, etc.) Yeah I know I am being picky but I want some good scares. I find movies like "The Others" or "Skeleton Key" to creep me out the most. Standard slasher flicks are generally meh as well. Come through filmwise.

The Orphanage reminded me a lot of the Others but I'm not sure if that counts as "foreign scary" to you.

You could always go with the "classics": The Exorcist and Poltergeist are two that spring to mind which many of the younger generation might not have yet seen. When I saw Poltergeist in the cinema, I literally lifted my feet off the floor so I'd be safer. Yeah, it sounds stupid, but on the plus side, nothing got me.
Robin: "Gosh, Batman, is there anything you don't know?"
Batman: "Oh yes, Robin. Several things, in fact."

The Descent scared the crap out of me, and several other people in the same cinema.
Statler: Well, how do you like the film?
Waldorf: I've seen detergents leave a better film than this.

The Orphanage is probably the best one I've seen recently.

More older films:

Rosemary's Baby
The Haunting (original only)
Black Sunday (La maschera del demonio)
Village of the Damned (remake's not bad, but original is much better)
Dementia 13
Magic
The Other
The Uninvited (1940's)

:green: on The Descent and The Orphanage (the latter seems more in keeping with the movies you describe as creeping you out). I still think the original Halloween is creepy as hell, and Poltergeist although it's been way overplayed on cable (and do not watch any of the sequels).

I thought it was scary when I saw it in the cinema as well, but I was rather young then, so it's no indication.

Event Horizon - ok, so a sci-fi/horror, but also quite disturbing.

Oh, and you can't go wrong with The Blair Witch project.

Pet Cemetery
The Mist (surprisingly not bad)
28 Days Later
The Shining

And I'll second...
The Exorcist
The Thing

Season of the Witch? Really? I won't slam you if you legitimately liked that but I would be interested in knowing why.

Perhaps even more disappointing than the lack of a Michael Myers storyline in that, was a lack of Ms. Nelkin's boobs.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have heard great things about The Orphanage so will def check that one out. I've pretty much seen all the classics and series like Nightmare, Halloween, Friday 13, Poltergeist.

Anyone seen "Drag me to Hell"? It looked liked it could have promise.
