Big news from the Batman camp in today’s L.A. Times: Christopher Nolan has revealed the name of the third film in his Gotham City trilogy. In July 2012, we’ll be queuing for The Dark Knight Rises.

Not only that, but in something of a bombshell, Nolan went on to dispell what many had begun to assume to be a given – “It won’t be the Riddler,” reports L.A.T.’s blog Hero Complex. So easy to get ahead of yourself, isn't it? Of course, true to form, the director wouldn’t reveal who it would be.

What Nolan seemed most interested in imparting was that he’s convinced Warner Bros. to keep telling his story in 2D, and to continue down the path of hi-def IMAX sequences. And he’ll get no argument from us on the subject – if it ain't broke, etc.

The post contains one other potentially juicy, enigmatic Nolan quote: “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.” From here, you can go down two schools of thought – 1) This is a straightforward, non-commital comment. 2) You can subscribe to the oft-chanted mantra that "In comic books, no-one is ever really dead" – and we lost two big characters in The Dark Knight. But then again, of course, that doesn’t – to date – really wash with the realistic leanings of the first two films. What was that about getting ahead of ourselves? Pah! Tish! Etc.!

"The Dark Knight Rises", huh? Well let's hope he can avoid a yeast infection.

Dude, he is already battling Erectile Dysfunction, give the man a break.

This might be a real tough film for our heroic friend; I hope he stumbles upon a twin set of bathtubs near a forest or waterfall before time runs out.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle (AKA Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Whatever. Portman seemed like a better fit, imo.

But if that happened, I couldn't say "dibs."

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is increasingly one of the most interesting actors working in Hollywood, which would explain why Chris Nolan wants to keep him close by casting him in The Dark Knight Rises.

The pair have just worked on Nolan’s other massive film Inception, and Deadline report that Gordon-Levitt “will be in [Rises] when Nolan starts production this spring”.

Who’ll he be playing? Nobody’s talking yet, though internet speculation has long been rife that Gordon-Levitt could tackle the role of cheeky villain The Riddler.

Knowing Nolan, though, he won’t want to bog down his last Batman gig with three new villains – he already has Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane.

For now, then, it’s a mystery. But still the kind of excellent news that has us feeling certain Rises can match Dark Knight for awesomeness. In fact, file this under ‘most awesome news we’ve heard this week’. Yes, really.

Levitt has to be the Riddler. If this is Nolans last, he's gonna make it awesome. Agree with SF about Brick being awesome as well.

Not even Nolan could make the boy wonder cool could he?

I wonder if he might consider casting Levitt as Robin? I wouldn't know if I should be happy or sad about that.

All I've heard so far is that Levitt could be playing Dr. Hugo Strange.

Personally, I think it's the type of character that fits the mold when it comes to Nolan's films.

I just read about that character in Wiki. Definitely an interesting character that could fit into Nolan's universe.
